The Kawasaki GPZ 500 S , which came onto the market between 1986 and 1987, belongs to the sports tourer category . Outside of Europe it is also known as "EX 500". In the United States and South America contributes to the revised model version from Year the designation 1994 Ninja 500 , from 1998 Ninja 500R .

It was built in two series . A distinction is therefore only made between “A” and “D” models. The A-model ( EX500A and EX500B ) was produced from 1987 and 1988 to 1993, respectively. After that, the D model was launched. Here, too, a distinction is made between different types, although technically all are identical: EX500C (Bj. 1994–2001), EX500D and EX500E . The trade name, the engine number and the prefix of the chassis number give way to z. T. on the type and among each other, z. B. EX500-F1 / EX500D… (chassis no.) For an EX500C (type).

Kawasaki sold over 24,000 units of the GPZ 500 S in 17 years of production in Germany alone . It has not been offered on the European market since 2004 because it does not meet the new emissions standard . In the US, however, it was sold until 2009.

engine

The GPZ 500 S has a number of two-cylinder of 500 cm 3 - displacement class . It is largely identical to that of the Kawasaki EN-500 , the Kawasaki KLE 500 and the Kawasaki ER-5 . The eight valves are controlled by two overhead camshafts . In addition, the strong vibrations of in-line twin cylinders are mitigated by a balancer shaft .

In the GPZ 500 S, the engine was fitted with modified camshafts that have different timing. This increased the engine output by 11 HP (8 kW) compared to the version used in the ER-5 and by 15 HP (11 kW) compared to the version of the KLE 500. The GPZ 500 S is one of the most powerful 500 cm³ series machines with a four-stroke engine that has ever been sold in Europe.
