The Kawasaki GPZ 600 R is a motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki , which was built from 1985 to 1989.

history

Kawasaki presented in late 1984 with the GPZ 600 R (ZX 600 A) is a super sport middle class machine according to the concept of the larger GPZ 900 R . To demonstrate its sporting properties, Kawasaki presented the machine to the press at the Circuito del Jarama in Spain. The 600 series differs from the predecessor model GPZ 550 with air-cooled motor, among other things, through a water-cooled motor. With 55 kW (75 hp) it was the most powerful in its class. The GPZ 600 R was offered for 9,380  DM .

In retrospect, the GPZ is considered to be the founder of the sporty 600 mid-range class, in which up to 96 kW (130 PS) are currently made available with significantly reduced weight due to a year-long arms race among manufacturers.

Technical specifications

engine

The water-cooled four - cylinder in - line engine with 592 cm³ is suspended in rubber elements. It has a four-valve cylinder head with fork rocker arms and adjusting screws . It has an output of 55 kW (75 PS), which means that it has a specific output of 93 kW / l (127 PS / l). However, the specialist press did not measure more than 54 kW (73 PS) on dynamometers. The maximum power is at 10,500 min -1 (2012 to about 14000 min -1 reached). Bore × stroke are 60 × 52.4 mm - so the engine is designed with a short stroke , the compression is 11: 1, suitable for normal gasoline. The engine has two overhead camshafts , oil cooler (oil volume 3.5 l), no balance shaft, water cooler (2.5 l coolant), a 4 in 2 exhaust system. The clutch is operated mechanically by a cable, the power is transmitted by a six-speed gearbox.

In 1989, the 85 PS engine with measured 60 kW (81 PS) of the successor GPX 600 R, which had been built in parallel for a long time, was implanted in the GPZ in order to stand up to the meanwhile stronger competition. Since the air filter, carburetor and exhaust system were not adopted, only 60 kW (82 PS) were officially reported. Ultimately, similar values were measured on the dynamometer as with the 75 HP engine, so that the driving performance was roughly on the same level.

Frame and chassis

The double loop pipe frame is made of square steel tubing, in the USA there was also a version with an aluminum frame. The frame was designed for handiness (values of the ZX-6 R from 2013 in brackets):

  • Wheelbase 1430 mm (1400 mm),
  • Trail 97 mm (103 mm),
  • Steering head angle 63 ° (66 °).

The standpipe diameter is 37 mm (41 mm). One innovation was the AVDS system (Automatic Variable Damping System), an automatic, load-dependent adjustment of the compression damping and an anti-dive, which was still common at the time, to avoid excessive brake nodding . The fork is also air-assisted. At the rear there is also an air-assisted spring strut with 140 mm spring travel, which is articulated in such a way that the spring rate increases during compression ("progressive", Uni Trak system). The front wheel is braked by two 270 mm (300 mm) brake discs with a fixed caliper. A brake disc also supports the rear. In line with the fashion of the 80s, 16-inch wheels with tire dimensions 110/90 V16 (2.25 bar) and 130/90 V16 (2.5 bar) were used. The theoretical lean angle of the motorcycle is 51 °. The total mass with 18 l of petrol is approx. 217 kg (191).

Performance

  • Top speed: solo lying 217 km / h, sitting 204 km / h, with a pillion passenger 184 km / h
  • Acceleration: 0–100 km / h in 4.2 s; 0–160 km / h in 11.0 s, 0–200 km / h in 22.2 s, 400 m in 12.6 s; 1000 m in 24.6 s
  • Elasticity: 60–120 km / h in 6th gear: 10.0 s, 60–140 km / h in 6th gear: 14.8 s
  • Braking distance: 100 to 0 km / h in 44.1 m
  • Test consumption: 6.0–7.3 l / 100 km regular gasoline
