Previous model Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin
successor Honda CRF 1100 L Africa Twin

The Honda CRF 1000 L Africa Twin is an all-terrain motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Honda . The Enduro was developed as a modern interpretation of the previous model, the Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin , which was sold from 1990 to 2003.

designation

The project name of the pre-production model was True Adventure [ ˈtru: ədˈventʃəʳ ] ( German  True Adventure ). On May 12, 2015, Honda announced that the sales name for the series machine would be Africa Twin [ ˈæfrɪkə twɪn ] and that the market launch is planned for the end of 2015. The vehicle designation is CRF 1000 L, the prefix CR stands for Cross ( Motocross ), the F for Four-stroke ( four -stroke engine ), the number denotes the displacement class in cubic centimeters and the L stands for liquid-cooled ( liquid cooling ). The factory code SD 04 follows the Honda XL 1000 V Varadero (SD 01-03) produced until 2012 . From model year 2018, all versions of the CRF 1000 have the factory code SD 06.

The sales name Adventure has been used by competitors KTM and BMW for product lines since 2002 .

prototype

In June 2014, Honda filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an airbox mounted outside the motorcycle frame that allows for a slimmer and deeper fuel tank. This arrangement improves driving behavior off-road, as it lowers the center of gravity and allows the driver to move further forward without a large fuel tank blocking the way.

The prototype of the True Adventure was presented at the EICMA international motorcycle fair on November 6, 2014 in Milan . At the fair, the prototype was painted in camouflage and covered with mud .

construction

The liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 70 kW (95 PS) at a speed of 7500 min −1 and a maximum torque of 98 Nm at a speed of 6000 min −1 from a displacement of 998 cm³ . The two cylinders of the parallel twin have a bore of 92 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 75.1 mm. An overhead camshaft actuates two intake valves via bucket tappets and two exhaust valves per cylinder via roller rocker arms. The crankshaft is designed with a 270 degree offset. Two balance shafts are designed to reduce engine vibrations. One also drives the oil and water pump, the second is mounted in the clutch housing.

Two brake discs with an anti-lock braking system on the front wheel slow down . An (optional) dual clutch transmission , as is already available for various Honda models, such as the Honda VFR 1200 X Crosstourer , makes a manually operated clutch superfluous. The tires mounted on wire-spoke wheels have a diameter of 21 inches at the front and 18 inches at the rear. An O-ring chain works in the secondary drive .

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 km / h. With an average braking deceleration of 9.2 m / s², the braking system needs 41.9 meters from 100 km / h to a standstill. The 18.8 liter fuel tank enables a maximum range of 383 km.

Market positioning

The CRF series from Honda has been successfully represented in the enduro and motocross sectors for years . The CRF1000L is Honda's response to the market trend towards road-oriented travel enduros weighing over 250 kg such as the BMW R 1200 GS K50 , KTM 1190 Adventure , Ducati Multistrada 1200 and Triumph Tiger Explorer . With a lighter and more off-road design, the motorcycle is positioned between the adventure bikes with 800 and 1200 cm³ displacement and competes with the KTM 1050 Adventure and the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ABS , which also have a displacement of around one liter.

Conceptually, the Africa Twin brings together the all- terrain chassis and light frame of the Honda CRF450R motocrosser , the enlarged Unicam in-line engine of the Honda NC 700 X crossover bike and the tight fairing of a Triumph Tiger 800 .

The 49,641 participants in the “ Motorcycle ” readers' poll voted the Africa Twin “Motorcycle of the Year 2017”.

Reviews

“The Honda developers have managed to resume the legendary spirit. With a well thought-out concept, down-to-earth technology and electronics that have been reduced to the senses, the new Africa Twin has also become what the old one was: an excellent all-rounder. Uncomplicated on the journey, solid on the country road and excellent off-road. "

- Peter Mayer : Motorbike

“Honda has clearly been listening to owners who complain that adventure bikes are too big, and thus are too unwieldy off road. The True Adventure prototype is none of these. Taking heavy design cues from the Africa Twin, the bike looks to be nimble and on the low end of the weight scale. "

“Honda has clearly listened to owners who complain that today's adventure bikes are too big and consequently too bulky to handle off-road. The True Adventure is neither. By adopting clear design features of the Africa Twin , the motorcycle appears nimble and at the lower end of the weight scale. "

- William Conner : Ride apart

“The new Africa Parallel Twin is obviously a true adventure machine, providing extra displacement, power and nerve than what the BMW F 800 GS or the Triumph Tiger XC can offer, better long-range touring and asphalt stance than bikes such as the Yamaha XT 660 Tenere or the KTM 690 Enduro, while maintaining maneuverability on very rough grounds at premium level, a thing machines like the KTM 1190 Adventure, BMW R 1200 GS, Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere and the rest of the gang (Aprilia Caponord, Moto Guzzi Stelvio or Honda's Crosstourer) can only dream of. "

“The new Africa Paralleltwin is obviously a true adventure machine, equipped with more displacement, power and courage than a BMW F 800 GS or Triumph Tiger XC can offer, with better long-distance touring and asphalt suitability than motorcycles like the Yamaha XT 660 Z Ténéré or the KTM 690 Enduro , offering high maneuverability on rough terrain, an ability that machines like the KTM 1190 Adventure , BMW R 1200 GS K50 , Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Ténéré and the rest of the gear ( Aprilia ETV 1200 Caponord , Moto Guzzi Stelvio or Honda VFR 1200 X Crosstourer ) can only dream. "

- Florian Tibu : Autoevolution

“The prototype shows a twin engine, a conventional tubular steel frame, Pro-Link shock absorber and a relatively small tank. All in all, it looks like home cooking so far, like a BMW F 800 GS copy. "

- Markus Golletz : motorcycle travel guide

“The new CRF 1000 L Africa Twin is not an inflated SUV, but rather ties in with the legendary reputation of its predecessor, the XRV750. From the developer's point of view, developed with a balance of 50% terrain and 50% road, I would rather shift the weighting by 10% towards terrain. An off-road motorcycle with very good road characteristics. "

- Stefan Klabunde : Motorradreise.tv

“It impresses with the wide range of skills, the sum of its qualities, not a single outstanding characteristic. Like its predecessor, it is neither a rally rocket nor a stunner. Comfortable, economical, balanced. "

- Andreas Bildl : Motorcycle
