The XL1000V Varadero is a motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The travel enduro was presented on September 16, 1998 at the Intermot motorcycle fair in Munich-Riem and replaced in 2012 by the Honda VFR 1200 X Crosstourer . The motorcycle is named after a Cuban seaside resort .

Model history

The XL1000V Varadero was produced in the Japanese Honda factory in Hamamatsu from 1999 to 2000 and was given the factory name SD01. From 2001 production was relocated to the Spanish Honda plant in Montesa in order to be closer to the main sales market for travel enduro bikes in Europe . All Varaderos manufactured in Spain have the additional designation SD02. In 2003, Honda introduced a sleeker design and improved the suspension; the fuel supply was switched from carburettor to manifold injection. The secondary air system was supplemented by two regulated catalytic converters. The design was slightly revised in the course of a model update in 2007. From 2011 to 2012, the Varadero was manufactured in Atessa, Italy with the factory code SD03, which is optically and technically identical to the SD02 from year of construction 2007. In 2012 the Varadero was replaced by the Honda VFR1200X Crosstourer .

The V-engine of the Varadero 1000 comes from the Honda VTR1000F Firestorm . The liquid-cooled two-cylinder engine produced from 996 cc a nominal power of 69 kW (94 hp) and a maximum torque of 98 Nm at a speed of 6,000 min -1 . The transversely installed V-engine has a cylinder angle of ninety degrees. The two cylinders have a Ø 98 mm bore , the pistons have a stroke of 66 mm with a compression ratio of 9.8: 1. The fuel tank has a volume of 25 liters, of which four liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 91 octane .

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 209 km / h. The passage from 60 to 140 km / h succeeds in 10.4 seconds. The average fuel consumption is 6.2 liters per 100 km.

The chassis is based on a bridge frame of steel on. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a 43 mm standpipe diameter. The rear wheel is attached to a Prolink double swing arm with a central spring strut. The ground clearance is 180 mm. When ready to drive, the motorcycle weighs 265 kg, with the anti-lock braking system 271 kg. The maximum payload is 201 kg. The tires are 110/80-R19 at the front and 150/70-R17 at the rear.

Braking system

A double disc brake on the front wheel decelerates, and a disc brake with a diameter of 256 mm on the rear. All brakes have a three-piston floating caliper. A compound brake system called dual CBS controls the front and rear brakes in stages, even if only one brake is applied. An optional anti-lock braking system has been available since 2004 .

service

With the exception of the first small check after 1,000 kilometers, the service inspections are every 6,000 km. During the 24,000-kilometer inspection, the valve clearance is checked in addition to the normal large inspection.

Ingo Koecher writes on the auto.de website that the Varadero “only partially meets” the requirements of a travel enduro, as it feels more comfortable “on a long tour” and drives more like a sports tourer than an enduro .

“On rough terrain, however, the chassis quickly reaches its limits: the weight is too high, the suspension travel is too short, the ground clearance is too low and the series tires are too road-oriented.
