Atessa is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 10,567 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo . The municipality is located about 39 kilometers southeast of Chieti . The name of the main town is made up of the names of the two settlements that used to exist independently of each other: Ate and Tixa .

Economy and Transport

The municipality is the location of the joint venture Société Européenne de Véhicules Légers Sud. This is where the Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroën vans are assembled. Honda also maintains its Italian motorcycle production plant here .

The municipality is located on the former Strada Statale 364 di Atessa . Atessa used to be the terminus of Ferrovia Sangritana coming from Lanciano . The route has been closed since 1972.
