Palena is a member of the mountain community Comunità Montana Aventino-Medio Sangro . The place is surrounded by the Majella National Park . The neighboring municipalities are Ateleta ( AQ ), Campo di Giove (AQ), Cansano (AQ), Gamberale , Lettopalena , Montenerodomo , Pacentro (AQ), Pescocostanzo (AQ) and Taranta Peligna .

In winter the place, which today has 1292 inhabitants, turns into a ski area.
