The Majella National Park ( Italian Parco nazionale della Majella ) is a national park in the Italian Abruzzo . It was established in 1991 and extends over an area of ​​74,095 hectares of mostly mountainous terrain.

159.6 km² in the core zone of the national park belong to the wilderness areas certified by the European Wilderness Society . The park belongs to the Federazione Italiana Parchi e Riserve Naturali.

Geography and biodiversity

55% of the parking area is over 2000 m. Over 70% of the mammal species living in Abruzzo and over 45% of the species of mammals in Italy are found in the park area. In half of the biotope types of the different altitudes, 2114 plant species were identified, including 142 endemic species. Statistically, 65% of the Abruzzo and 37% of the Italian plant species occur in the national park.

Indicator species in the park are the Apennine wolves , Marsican brown bear , chamois , otters , snow voles , spectacled salamander , golden eagle , chough , hawks , plovers , meadow otters and smooth snakes .

The special features of the park include the majella columbine and Reichenbach's butterwort . The exposure as the southernmost alpine region in Europe favors the occurrence of floral relics. These include the Driade and the Yellow Alpine Poppy and the Silver Birch . Furthermore, there edelweiss , gentian and Alpine Aster find. For trees are below 1800 m mountain pine, partly in cripple shape and deeper also associated with beech Holly , maple, Speierling are mixed, yew and other species.
