geography

The national park is one of the younger parks in Italy and was established on May 21, 2001. 70 percent of the parking area is in Emilia-Romagna , the rest in the Tuscany region . In the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park, various former regional parks have been combined: the Parco Regionale del Gigante , parts of the Parco Regionale dell'Alta Val Parma e Cedra in Emilia-Romagna and the landscapes of the Lunigiana and Garfagnana on the Tuscan side, which are the most beautiful Denote the summit of the northern Apennine ridge . In addition to beeches, there are also firs and other conifers in the forest areas .

The national park administration is located in Sassalbo di Fivizzano .

Cultural history

Historically important routes run through the park (the Bergjoche delle Radici , di Pradarena , del Cerreto , del Lagastrello ) and there are a number of historical buildings ( bakeries , metati , coal mines , mills , old rural mountain houses). As everywhere in the Apennines, for centuries the population has concentrated on the use of forest resources ( wood , mountain grain , chestnuts , mushrooms , blueberries ) and on cheese production. The typical local cheese is Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan cheese), but sheep's cheese is also made in many small dairies and sold after only a short period of maturation.
