The Tuscan Archipelago

The Tuscan Archipelago National Park (Italian: Parco nazionale dell'Arcipelago Toscano ) is the largest marine reserve in Italy (marine parks). It was established in 1996 and extends over 17,887 hectares of land and, with 56,766 hectares of sea area, is the largest marine reserve in Europe.

The park is characterized by a diverse structure of different habitats. The different shapes of the coast and the structure of the seabed harbor enormous biological diversity. The park encloses the coasts of Elba , the steep rocky coast of West Capraia and a mosaic of different underwater habitats. The land area extends over the seven main islands of the Tuscan Archipelago : Elba, Giglio , Capraia, Montecristo , Pianosa , Giannutri , Gorgona as well as smaller islands in the sea areas.

In January 2012 the cruise ship Costa Concordia leaked and capsized on a rock in front of the island of Giglio .
