Gorgona (Italian: Isola di Gorgona [ɡorˈɡoːna]) is an Italian Mediterranean island, the northernmost and smallest island of the Tuscan Archipelago in the Tuscany region . It is located in the Ligurian Sea , 34 km from the port city of Livorno . It belongs administratively to the district 2 ( Circoscrizione 2: Venezia Nuova, Centro, San Marco, Pontino, Magenta, Origine, Isola di Gorgona ), one of the five districts of Livorno.

The island is 2.23 km² in size. An agricultural penal institution has been located on it since 1869, which takes up most of the area. The prison island is mountainous (up to 225 m) and overgrown with pine trees and Mediterranean maquis . According to the 2011 census, 37 permanent residents were counted in the main town of Gorgona Scalo. In 2011 the population (including prison staff and inmates) was estimated at around 160. The wine-growing on the island of Gorgona is an important economic factor since, 2013.

You can only visit Gorgona on Tuesdays in the summer months in small groups by prior arrangement.

Gorgona has the northernmost breeding grounds for the coral gull (Ichtyaetus audouinii), which is only found in the Mediterranean .
