The Formiche di Grosseto ( it. Formiche = ants) are several small rocks that are part of the Tuscan Archipelago . Administratively they belong to the municipality of Grosseto .

Location and description

The Formiche are surrounded by water around 100 m deep and are located several kilometers off the coast of the Parco Naturale della Maremma . They consist of three uninhabited islets with a total surface of about six hectares and a few meters high. From north to south these are:

  1. Formica Grande
  2. Formica Piccola
  3. Formica III

There is a lighthouse on the largest rock, the Formica Grande . The waters around the Formiche are a popular diving spot.

Flora and fauna

A phenotype of the ruin lizard (Podarcis siculus) only occurs on the islands ; in the 19th century this population was classified as a separate subspecies (P. sicula robertii) . The gecko species Phyllodactylus europaeus is also present. The islands are a popular breeding ground for pairs of steppe gulls , but the local vegetation (eg. As an endemic there Strandfliederart Limonium doriae compromise). In order to be able to control the further development, the island has been declared a protected area SIR (Zone of Regional Importance) .

The island is also located in the multinational sanctuary of the Santuario dei Cetacei ( Sanctuary of the Whales ). In fact, e.g. B. Dolphin sightings are quite common in the area.
