The Garfagnana is a mountainous landscape in the Italian province of Lucca . It lies between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines and is traversed by the Serchio . As one of the rainiest areas in Italy, it is heavily forested with sweet chestnuts , oaks and pines . The main town is Castelnuovo di Garfagnana .

Before the unification of Italy, the region belonged to the Duchy of Modena of the Este family . In the 16th century, Ludovico Ariosto was its administrator for a short time.

While agriculture was the main industry in the past, it is now tourism.
