Civitella Messer Raimondo is an Italian commune in the province of Chieti . It has 807 inhabitants and covers 12 km². The municipality is near Fara San Martino and Colle San Leonardo .
The neighboring municipalities are: Casoli , Fara San Martino , Gessopalena , Lama dei Peligni and Palombaro .
history
The village was called Civitella until 1863. The rock carvings in the La Pineda cave date from the Paleolithic. Archaeological finds have been excavated in the area of Fonte Liberatori and on a hill in Piano. Among other things, prehistoric graves with grave goods were found, including the bronze furnishings. Mosaics from Roman times were found on the hill. However, no surviving documents from Roman times were found. In the 12th century the village was founded as Civitellam . In the 14th century, Civitella was the fief of Raymond Annichinis. The last feudal lords of the village were the Baglioni , whose name the castle was given in the municipality.
Attractions
- The Palazzo Gattone stands on the top of a hill. The entrance is on an alley, where the entrance is secured by a portal made of stone blocks. On the east side of the street are original works of some structures including the barrel vaulted porch.
- The Castle of the Counts Baglioni ( Castello Baglioni ). It stands in Piazza Roma and has a rectangular floor plan. The castle has a bastion on the eastern front. The building dates from the 18th century.
- The Church of the Holy Savior ( Santissimo Salvatore ). According to literature sources, the church dates from the thirteenth century. It was recently restored. The portal is crowned by a triangular pediment in which is a mosaic of St. Erasmus. The columns and pilasters are painted marble imitations.
