Ferrovia Sangritana
The Ferrovia Sangritana , also Ferrovia Adriatico – Sangritana , is a standard gauge private railway in southern Italy . Your route leads from Marina San Vito on the main Pescara – Bari line to Castel di Sangro in the hinterland. In addition, the Ortona Marina - Caldari and Torino di Sangro - Piazzano di Atessa routes are used for freight transport. The route is 130 km long, 111 km of which are electrified with the 3000 V DC voltage customary in Italy.
history
The first sections, at that time still as a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 950 mm, were opened as FAA (Ferrovia Adriatico Appennino) in 1912, the lines Marina S.Vito -Lanciano and Crocetta-Caldari-Ortona. In 1914 the connection Lanciano – Crocetta – Archi – Castel di Sangro and Archi – Atessa followed. In 1924 the line was electrified with 2400 V direct current . Between 1956 and 1959, the conversion to the standard gauge of 1435 mm took place. The power system with 3000 V direct current of the Ferrovie dello Stato was also adjusted. This makes it possible for trains to continue on the FS line to Pescara .
In 1972, operations on the Archi – Atessa stretch were discontinued. In 1982, the Crocetta – Caldari section was discontinued, and in 1984 passenger traffic between Caldari and Ortona was discontinued. In January 2007 a new, direct line from Marina S.Vito to Lanciano went into operation and the old one was closed. This was necessary because the FS relocated the Pescara – Bari line and a new station was being built in Marina S. Vito.
