The DL 1000 V-Strom is a motorcycle of the travel enduro category from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Suzuki , which was manufactured from 2002 to 2007 (for the US market until 2009).

technology

The motorcycle has a V-engine with two cylinders and a displacement of 996 cm³ with a rated output of 72 kW (98 hp). The four-valve, four- stroke engine has a transverse crankshaft with two overhead, gear-driven and chain-driven camshafts. This motor, which also drives the Suzuki TL1000 superbike , has been modified accordingly in terms of power and torque for the V-Strom and adapted to the conditions of a travel enduro. The maximum torque is already available here at 6,400 rpm; on the TL1000, however, only at 8,000 rpm.

The driving behavior and the straight-line stability are neutral even at high speeds, the sixth gear is designed as a speed-reducing overdrive . The primary drive takes place via gears on a hydraulically operated multi-plate oil bath clutch to a six-speed gearbox. The chassis construction consists of a bridge frame made of aluminum profiles with a bolted rear frame.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 22 liters and allows a range of 350 kilometers with an average fuel consumption of 6.5 liters per 100 km. The V-Strom accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km / h.

Model history

  • 2002 Market launch of the DL 1000 V-Strom as a "sport enduro tourer".
  • 2003 Modification of the clutch basket and the seat. The spring preload is now adjustable for the fork.
  • 2004 Change of the model name to V-Strom 1000. Cockpit instruments are similar to those of the V-Strom 650 with a larger digital display. In addition, the windshield with three height adjustments, new hand protectors, mirrors and indicators. The gearbox and shift mechanism have been changed slightly.
  • 2005 New switch unit on the right, permanent driving light.
  • 2006 crankcase and oil spray nozzles changed.
  • 2007 Last model year of the type V-Strom 1000 in Germany (still on sale until 2008). The only change: white indicator lenses.
  • 2014 New model based on the revised 90 degree V2 engine. The most important changes: 1037 instead of 996 cm³, 100 PS, new aluminum frame, 13 percent lighter, upside-down fork, radial brake, ABS, traction control, 2-in-1 exhaust system, tank capacity 20 instead of 22 liters. New: cockpit, fairing parts, headlights.

Sister models

The Suzuki V-Strom has also been sold with a less powerful engine than the DL650 V-Strom since 2004 . The Kawasaki KLV1000 was created through a cooperation between Suzuki and Kawasaki and is almost identical to the V-Strom.

successor

In 2012, Suzuki presented a concept study of the possible successor, the V-Strom 1000 Concept. The design is based on Suzuki's first travel enduro, the DR750s . The well-known V2 engine has been completely revised. The Concept also has an adjustable anti-slip control, anti-lock braking system and radially screwed brake calipers. At the end of September 2013, Suzuki presented the concept carrier as the V-Strom 1000 ABS , which will be sold from the 2014 model year.

Reviews

“In model years 2002 and 2003, weak torsion springs on the clutch basket sometimes led to rattling, and the hydraulic clutch tends to leak. Check! Be careful if the V2 dies during a test drive - the reason may be a valve clearance that is too small. Hard throttle response, exhaust slapping and constant speed jerking of the engine, which is very leanly tuned via injection, are not uncommon, but if they are strong, a professional workshop should readjust the throttle valve system - this costs between 50 and 100 euros. "

- Thorsten Dentges : MOTORCYCLE

“There is hardly anything wrong with the handling of the V-Strom; No other motorcycle in this class is so agile and stable at the same time. This is due to the torsion-resistant aluminum frame, the very well coordinated spring elements and - last but not least - the lowest weight of all travel enduros. The Suzi converts every steering command into a change of direction precisely and spontaneously. Tight combinations of curves or fast, drawn-out bends - the V-Strom throws away at the highest sporty and ambitious level and is always easy to control. Even with the gas tap fully open on the motorway, there is neither wobbling nor swinging. "
