The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure [ ədˈvɛntʃə ] is a motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The travel enduro was presented to the press on November 15, 2005 at the EICMA international motorcycle fair in Milan . From 2006 to 2013, 79,118 Adventure based on the BMW R 1200 GS (K25) were manufactured at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . Like all models in the R series, the Adventure is powered by a boxer engine. The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal factory code is K255 .

technology

drive

It is driven by an air and oil-cooled two - cylinder engine with a displacement of 1170 cm³. The boxer engine generates a nominal output of 81 kW (110 hp) and a maximum torque of 120 Nm at a speed of 6000 min −1 .

The cylinder head and drive train of the boxer engine

The four valves per cylinder head are controlled by two overhead, chain-driven camshafts via bucket tappets . The two cylinders have a Ø 101 mm bore , the pistons have a stroke of 73 mm and a compression ratio of 12.0: 1. Due to strict emissions regulations, the engine runs very lean and hot.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds and, according to the registration certificate, reaches a top speed of 203 km / h. The trade journal Motorrad News determined a top speed of 212 km / h.

landing gear

The chassis is based on a two-part tubular space frame , which is made up of a front and rear frame and has a load-bearing motor-transmission unit. The front subframe is made of cast aluminum , the rear frame is made of tubular steel.

Paralever with torque support on top

The front Telelever fork has a Ø 41 mm standpipe diameter and 210 mm suspension travel. The rear aluminum single- sided swing arm with Paralever torque support has a central spring strut and 220 mm suspension travel. The spring preload can be mechanically adjusted five times at the front, the spring preload at the rear is infinitely variable hydraulically using a handwheel, and the rebound damping is also adjustable. The steering head has an angle of attack of 24.8 degrees, the caster is 89 mm.

The power is converted by a claw-shifted six-speed gearbox with helical gearing, the power separation by a hydraulically operated single-disc dry clutch and the secondary drive by a cardan drive . The permissible total weight is 475 kg. With the aluminum case system developed by Touratech, the fully fueled motorcycle weighs 291 kg, which reduces the maximum payload to 184 kg.

Braking system

A floating double-disc “Evo” brake with a diameter of 305 mm and a 4-piston fixed calliper slows the front wheel. A single disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm and a double-piston floating caliper works on the rear wheel. The braking system is supported by a partially integrated anti-lock braking system that can be switched off. The motorcycle needs 40.5 meters to decelerate from 100 km / h to a standstill on a dry road with the anti-lock braking system activated.

The Adventure is delivered with cross-spoke wheels as standard. The rim sizes are 2.50 × 19 ″ at the front and 4.00 × 17 ″ at the rear. The tires are 110 / 80R19 at the front and 150 / 70R17 at the rear.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by an electronic intake manifold fuel injection. The ignition is digitally controlled by two transistor-controlled ignition coils per cylinder. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. The fuel tank has a volume of 38 liters, from the model revision only 33 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The four-stroke engine consumes an average of 5.6 liters of fuel per 100 km and has a theoretical range of 678 km (MT: 589 km).

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 14 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 720 watts. The cockpit consists of the round displays of the speedometer and the rev counter and the liquid crystal display of the driver information display (FID).

Exhaust system

The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and falls below the limit values of the EURO3 emission class . The two exhaust manifolds open into a stainless steel rear silencer on the left side of the vehicle.

Model development

Compared to the previous model, the BMW R 1150 GS Adventure , the nominal output has been increased by 2.5 mm more stroke and higher compression by 10 kW (14 hp). The curb weight increased by 14 kg to 263 kg.

The Adventure has been technically revised twice. In 2008, the compression pressure and the rated power were increased by 7 HP, the gearbox was fitted with larger bearings and a shorter gear ratio, and an electronically adjustable chassis (Enduro ESA ) was introduced. The electrical output of the alternator has been increased from 600 to 720 watts and the motorcycle saddle has a thicker padding.

In 2010, the boxer engine got the cylinder heads of the Race Replica HP2 Sport with two camshafts ( dohc ) and larger throttle valves . Together with larger valves, optimized combustion chambers and ducts and new air ducts, the nominal power increased by a further 5 hp. The exhaust system was about an exhaust manifold supplemented sedentary, electronically controlled exhaust flap.

Market positioning

In the travel enduro class with a displacement of over one liter, the Adventure has below average motorization.

Together with the base model BMW R 1200 GS, the Adventure dominated the German registration statistics over the entire production period. In addition to the standard version, there were also the special models “30 years GS” (from 2010), “Triple Black” (from 2011) and “90 years of BMW Motorrad” (from 2013).

The successor based on the BMW R 1200 GS (K50) was presented in an official press release on October 7, 2013 .

review

The R 1200 GS Adventure became known through the ten-part documentary series Long Way Down with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman .

Reviews

“Just like in the GS 1200, the air / oil-cooled four-valve boxer turns cheekily and freely like never before. And if the sister is already a big hit, the Adventure goes one better: The split, foldable brake lever, the wide, toothed footrests, the sturdy crash bar and the suspension travel that is 20 millimeters longer improve the off-road capability even more. "

- Rolf Henninges : Motorbike

“Even if 95 percent of all owners prefer motorways and country roads. In the city, the 256 kilograms curb weight are quite difficult to move, despite 81 kW / 110 PS and a six-speed gearbox that can be shifted very smoothly. The GS is too expansive for the short intermediate sprint with traffic lights, meandering between columns of vehicles in rush hour is exhausting and jumping up and down while shopping is tedious. "

“A thickly padded bench seat, a wide handlebar - the high disc that can be easily adjusted with two screws - that spoils you on long journeys. And that's exactly where the GS is located - whether it's a country road or gravel, whether it's Germany or the dusty desert of Africa. The 110 hp are always pleasant to dose, mostly completely sufficient and harmonize perfectly with the 6-speed gearbox, which can be shifted very smoothly. "
