Long Way Down is the title of a television series about a motorcycle trip that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman took in 2007. She succeeds Long Way Round in 2004.

travel

This journey took the two adventurers over 15,000 miles from John o 'Groats in Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa . The journey started on May 12, 2007 and initially led through Scotland, England , France and finally Italy . There they boarded the ferry to Tunisia on May 20th .

On the ferry, the news reached them that the government of Libya had banned the American team members from entering the country. After crossing Tunisia, the now decimated team traveled through Libya within five days. The rest, who were not allowed to enter, traveled to Cairo by plane and completed the team at the Libyan-Egyptian border.

In Egypt , they visited the pyramids and drove on sandy terrain for the first time. It was there that the first problems with the motorcycles appeared. The rear suspension of McGregor's motorcycle broke and Claudio von Planta fell several times. This part of the route was covered under great time pressure, as entry into Sudan was only possible from Aswan by ferry across Lake Nasser and this ferry only operates once a week.

Via Sudan we went on to Ethiopia . There they visited schools on behalf of UNICEF , where they distributed notebooks with pens.

After they left Ethiopia and arrived in Kenya, they needed special protection from armed escorts, as attacks on foreigners repeatedly occurred on the road they were driving. In the following days they crossed Kenya, Uganda , Rwanda and Tanzania . When they then reached the border with Malawi , Eve, the wife of Ewan McGregor , joined the two globetrotters. After initial difficulties with handling the motorcycle and a few falls, she was able to keep pace and drove a few stages with her husband and Boorman.

After a few days, Eve McGregor left them again. Ewan McGregor and Boorman continued their journey through Botswana and Namibia . There they reached the southwest African coast and set out on the last leg.

When they arrived in South Africa, they were no longer properly focused, so that an accident occurred between Charley Boorman and Claudio von Planta, but the outcome was mild.

The final stage went from Cape Agulhas , the southernmost point of Africa, to Cape Town. The trip ended there on August 5, 2007.

equipment

As with Long Way Round , they turned to BMW for the trip . They were given the latest off-road motorcycle at the time, the R 1200 GS Adventure (K255) .

Equipment and crew were transported through Africa in two Nissan Patrols .
