Film career

With the help of his father, the director John Boorman , Boorman achieved a film appearance at the age of six in Everyone Is To Die (1972). Nine years later he returned to the big screen with the film Excalibur . Here his father also directed and his siblings Katrine Boorman and Telsche Boorman played. Charley had his first leading role in the film The Emerald Forest (1985), which in turn was directed and produced by his father. While filming The Kissing Snake (1997) he met Ewan McGregor , with whom he has been a close friend ever since. Since 2004/2005 he has been taking a break from the film business in order to devote himself to motorcycling (e.g. for the Dakar Rally ).

Projects as an adventurer

Long Way Round

Motorcycles were his passion all his life. He drove his first at the age of seven. In 2004 he went to the " Long Way Round " with Ewan McGregor . In 115 days the two drove on motorcycles ( BMW R 1150 GS ) from London to New York and covered 30,395 km. This ride was filmed for a television series and is also available on DVD.

Race to Dakar

In 2006 Charley Boorman took part in the Dakar Rally - this time on BMW motorcycles completely rebuilt by Touratech.

During the preparations for the race (crossing sand dunes) he broke his collarbone in Dubai, which is why participation was not guaranteed until a few weeks before the start.

Together with a team of two other drivers and two mechanics, he was again accompanied and filmed by Russ Malkin, who has already produced " Long Way Round " and later " Long Way Down ". However, on the fifth day, after a fall, Charley fractured two finger joints on one hand and dislocated his thumb on the other hand. Nevertheless, after the accident, he finished the 450-kilometer stage over gravel and sand. Likewise, he did not leave early, but instead actively supported the racing team and the two other drivers until the end of the event.

Long way down

Impressed by the experiences of the Long Way Round adventure, Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor undertook a motorcycle trip comparable to the "Long Way Round" in 2007, the Long Way Down . Accompanied and documented by the same film crew as in "Long Way Round" and " Race to Dakar ", the two long-time friends covered a route from John o 'Groats in Northern Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa between May 12 and August 5 back about 25,000 km. This time they traveled on BMW R 1200 GS Adventure K255 , which were modified for off-road use with accessories from Touratech. During the trip, as in Long Way Round, they visited various UNICEF projects .

By Any Means

In 2008 Boorman embarked on a trip from his hometown in Ireland to Sydney without using an airplane. In German-speaking countries, the travelogue has been published under the title "The hard way: 30,000 kilometers from Ireland to Australia". In doing so, Boorman used a wide variety of - mostly locally common - modes of transport from fishing boats to tuk-tuk to elephants.

From Sydney to Tokyo By Any Means

A year later he embarked on a trip from Sydney to Tokyo , whose report was on DVD in England under the name "Right to the Edge: Sydney to Tokyo By Any Means". In Germany, the series was broadcast on ProSieben Maxx in 2015 under the name "From Sydney to Tokyo - the main thing is to arrive" .
