Tomas Jonsson (born April 12, 1960 in Falun ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player (defender) who played for the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1989 . Since the end of his career he has worked as a trainer, among others for Leksands IF , Falun IF and Esbjerg fB Ishockey . Since 2012 he has been the assistant coach of the Danish men's national team .
Career
Jonsson began his career with the second division team Falun IF and moved to MoDo Hockey in the Elitserien before the 1977/78 season . A year later, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round in 25th place. Two years later he made his debut for the Islanders in the 1981/82 season and won the NHL championship, the Stanley Cup , with the team . He became the third European to win the Stanley Cup. In the following season he succeeded in defending his title with the Islanders.
Jonsson played for the Islanders until 1989, which then gave him to the Edmonton Oilers . However, he did not stay long with the Oilers, but returned to Europe to play for Leksands IF until 1998 .
International
Jonsson began representing his home country at world championships early on in his career, including becoming the 1991 ice hockey world champion. One of the highlights of his career was winning the gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics . By winning this medal, he was accepted into the prestigious Triple Gold Club , which only includes players who have won the Stanley Cup, a world championship title and an Olympic gold medal.
