Start of career in Lower Austria

Stankovic started his career at USV Pressbaum . For the 2004/05 season he moved to FC Tulln . For the 2005/06 season he joined the SV Königstetten . In the 2006/07 season he played at USC Muckendorf . For the 2007/08 season he joined the youth team at SV Horn . In August 2008 he played for the first time for the second team of Horner in the eight-class second class . In the 2008/09 season he came to 14 missions for Horn II in the eighth highest division. At the end of the season he was promoted to 1st class with the team .

For the 2009/10 season he moved into the squad of Horn's third-class first team. In March 2010 he made his debut against SV Würmla for this in the regional league . By the end of the season he came to two appearances in the third highest division and 15 appearances for the second team in the seventh highest division. In the 2010/11 season, Stankovic played three regional league games and 13 in 1st class.

In the 2011/12 season he was able to establish himself as the goalkeeper of the first team and made 26 appearances in the regional league, and in that season he was called up for the second team for the last time. At the end of the season, he was promoted to the second division with the Lower Austrians after winning a relegation against WSG Wattens . In July 2012, he made his debut in the second-highest division when he was in the starting line-up against SCR Altach on the first matchday of the 2012/13 season . In April 2013, the goalkeeper scored his first goal of his career in a 1-1 draw against FC Lustenau 07 with the goal to make it 1-1 with a header in stoppage time. In his first second division season he came to 34 missions.

Change to the Bundesliga

For the 2013/14 season he moved to the newly promoted Bundesliga club SV Grödig . After starting the season as the second goalkeeper behind Kevin Fend , he made his Bundesliga debut on matchday 12 against FC Admira Wacker Mödling in October 2013 . He then prevailed against Fend before he was injured in March 2013 and was out for over a month. In his first Bundesliga season he made 17 appearances, with Grödig he qualified for the UEFA Europa League in third place . In this he came in the 2014/15 season to four missions before Grödig was eliminated in the third qualifying round against Zimbru Chișinău .

In August 2014 it was announced that Stankovic was moving to league competitor FC Red Bull Salzburg for the 2015/16 season, with whom he received a contract that ran until June 2020. In the 2014/15 season he made 35 appearances for Grödig, only on the 35th matchday Pirmin Strasser was preferred against SCR Altach . During that season he was named the best goalkeeper in the league.

Into the Champions League with Salzburg

At Salzburg he started the 2015/16 season as the first goalkeeper, but after several mistakes he lost his place to Alexander Walke after a few games . In his first season with the Salzburg team, he only made five league appearances; with the "bulls" he was not represented internationally after defeat in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League against Malmö FF and then in qualifying for the Europa League against FK Dinamo Minsk . Stankovic made two appearances against Malmö in qualifying. Nationally, however, he was successful with the club and became champion and cup winner. As in the previous season, he hardly got a chance in the 2016/17 season: He played two games in the Bundesliga and played in the group stage of the Europa League, although he was seeded in all six games in the Cup. With Salzburg he was able to defend the double of the championship and the cup.

In the 2017/18 season he made nine appearances in the league, he also played a game in the Europa League again, in which he failed with the club only in the semifinals against Olympique Marseille . He was seeded again in the cup, but this season Salzburg only won the championship after losing the cup final against SK Sturm Graz . For the 2018/19 season he finally became Salzburg's first goalkeeper again, while Walke was to play the international games and the Cup. Stankovic made 28 appearances in the Bundesliga, but remained without an appearance in the Europa League, in which they failed in the round of 16 against SSC Napoli , and an appearance in the Cup. In the 2018/19 season they could get the double again, and Stankovic was named the best goalkeeper in the league a second time after 2014/15. After Walke was seriously injured in the summer break before the 2019/20 season, Stankovic was now used in all competitions. For example, he played for Salzburg - which was able to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history - in September 2019 against KRC Genk for the first time in the “ premier class ”. In October 2019, he tore a muscle bundle in the Champions League against Naples, after which he was out for over a month. He made his comeback in December 2019. In the 2019/20 season he made a total of 27 league appearances, five in the Cup, four in the Champions League and two after switching to the Europa League. With Salzburg he was able to successfully defend the double.

National team

Stankovic made his debut against the Czech Republic for the Austrian U-21 selection in June 2014 . By September 2014, he completed three games for this.

He was appointed to the senior national team for the first time in May 2018 . He made his debut for this in September 2019 when he was in the starting line-up in the European Championship qualification against Latvia .
