Jesse Marsch (born November 8, 1973 in Racine , Wisconsin ) is a former American soccer player and current coach . He was a player in Major League Soccer for 14 years and won the MLS Cup three times and the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup four times with his teams . Before he moved to RB Leipzig as an assistant coach in the summer of 2018 , he worked at the sister club New York Red Bulls . He has been coaching the Austrian Bundesliga club FC Red Bull Salzburg since the 2019/20 season .
Player career
college
Marsch played college soccer at Princeton University , where he joined the NCAA Division I First-Team All-America selection in 1995. In the 1996 MLS College Draft, he was selected in the third round by DC United . United's then assistant coach Bob Bradley trained him at Princeton.
professional
Marsch played his first two professional years for DC United , but was only used 15 times. In 1998, Bob Bradley became a Chicago Fire coach . He brought March in exchange for AJ Wood and a pick for the 1998 College Draft at Chicago. Marsch quickly became a regular within the team and stayed there until 2005. Up until that point, he was the most used player in the franchise.
After the 2005 season he moved to the CD Chivas USA , which were also coached by Bob Bradley. On February 5, 2010, he announced his resignation. Marsch is one of three players who played in the first 14 seasons of the MLS.
National team
Jesse Marsch played twice for the USA national team . He made his debut on November 11, 2001 in the game against Trinidad and Tobago, which was played as part of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup . He came on in the 82nd minute for Joe-Max Moore . His second game took place on June 2, 2007. He was again substituted on in the game.
Coaching career
After his career as an active player, he became an assistant coach for the USA national team. On August 11, 2011, he was confirmed as the coach of Montreal Impact , which began playing in 2012 in Major League Soccer . After only one season, Marsch left the team on November 3, 2012.
Since January 7, 2015 march was coach of the New York Red Bulls , where he in the 2015 season for "Coach of the Year" ( Coach of the Year in MLS is selected).
After more than three years with Red Bull GmbH's MLS franchise, he was signed by RB Leipzig for the 2018/19 season and acted there as one of Ralf Rangnick's 3 co-coaches .
For the 2019/20 season, Marsch took over the Bundesliga team of FC Red Bull Salzburg as the successor to Marco Rose . He received a contract that runs until June 2022.
