Count Lev Alexejewitsch von Perowski ( Russian Лев Алексе́евич Перо́вский , transcribed as Perofsky, Perovskii, Perovskiy, Perovsky and Perovsky; is also quoted as LA Perovski; * September 9, 1792 ; † November 21, 1856 in St. Petersburg ) was a Russian nobleman , Statesman and mineralogist .

Life

He was the illegitimate son of Count Alexei Kirillowitsch Rasumowski (1748-1822) from his connection with Maria Mikhailovna Sobolewski. His brothers included Nikolai Ivanovich (1785-1858), later governor of the Crimea, the later generals Vasily Alexejewitsch (1795-1857), Boris Alexejewitsch (1815-1881) and the writer Antonij Pogorelskij (1787-1836), known by his pseudonym .

Lev Alexejewitsch was ennobled in 1804 and took part in the battles of Borodino , Maloyaroslavets , Vyazma and Krasnoye during the Patriotic War of 1812 . In 1818 he reached the rank of colonel and was now active in the general staff of the guard troops. From 1818 to 1823 he served as Quartermaster General of the 1st Reserve Cavalry Corps. He then entered the public service, became a senator and, in 1829, vice-president of the Department of Apanagen.

Under Tsar Nicholas I, he held the office of Minister of the Interior from September 23, 1841 to August 30, 1852.

When Prince Wolkowski died in 1852, he was appointed Minister of Apanagen and conductor of the imperial cabinet in his place. In addition, he was director of the Commission for Ancient Research from 1850 and sponsored archaeological excavations. He put together an extensive collection of Greek antiques and coins as well as a rich collection of old Russian silver coins and medals.

In 1845 he proposed the establishment of the Russian Geographical Society.

The mineral perovskite was named after him and the plant genus Perovskia after his brother Wassili (governor of Orenburg )
