Gerald Baumgartner (born November 14, 1964 in Oberndorf near Salzburg ) is a former Austrian soccer player and current soccer coach .

Player career

Gerald Baumgartner began playing soccer at 1. Oberndorfer SK before moving to the state capital in 1983 for SV Austria Salzburg . In the 1985/86 season he made his Bundesliga debut for Salzburg , which was followed by five more appearances and one goal. For the next two seasons he had to compete in the 2nd division with Salzburg Austria. In 1987 he moved to Austria in Vienna , but was only used sporadically in two seasons and in 1989 returned to Austria Salzburg for a year and a half. In spring 1991 he played for First Vienna FC and the following season in Steyr for Vorwärts . From 1992 to 1995 he played in the Innviertel at SV Ried before returning to his regular club in Oberndorf, for which he played as a player until 2004. In the 1998/99 season he ran briefly for Union Vöcklamarkt .

Success as a player

Coaching career

His first coaching station was the BNZ U-17 team from SV Austria Salzburg . After the takeover by Red Bull , he was appointed assistant coach of the second team. In 2006, he took over after the exemption from Franz Aigner for three games the post as head coach of the Juniors before he return to the second term after Thorsten Fink moved. On April 8, 2011, he took over the position of head coach after Niko Kovač was appointed assistant coach of the first team. He immediately won the championship of the Regionalliga West and the Salzburg Football Cup with the Juniors . After the fall season 2011 he left the Juniors together with his assistant coach Martin Hiden and became the coach of the new cooperation club of Red Bull Salzburg, FC Pasching. On May 27, 2014 Baumgartner became the new coach of the Austrian Bundesliga club Austria Wien . His first training session was on June 10, 2014. Baumgartner was released on March 22, 2015. His last game was a 1-0 loss against Ried the day before. In December 2015 he became the coach and sporting director of SV Austria Salzburg . At the end of June 2016, his contract with Austria was terminated. On January 3, 2017, he became the coach of the Bundesliga club SV Mattersburg . Mattersburg separated from Baumgartner in August 2018. The Burgenlanders scored three points in the first four games of the 2018/19 season and were second to last in the table.

On January 1, 2019, Baumgartner took over the post of head coach and sporting director at the second division club SV Ried . With Ried he rose to the Bundesliga as a second division champion in the 2019/20 season.
