Zlatko Junuzović (born September 26, 1987 in Loznica , SFR Yugoslavia ) is an Austrian football player . He has been playing for FC Red Bull Salzburg since summer 2018 . Before that, Junuzović was active at Werder Bremen for several years .

life and career

Zlatko Junuzović was born in Loznica in what was then the Yugoslav republic of Serbia and spent the first years of his life in the Bosnian Zvornik, 30 kilometers away . Due to the Bosnian War , he came to Kühnsdorf in Carinthia with his parents at the age of five and began his football career there. At the age of eleven he went to Graz to the Bruckner Sports Secondary School - Werner Gregoritsch was a teacher there at the time - and became a Styrian schoolmaster with the SHS in 2002. Then he began to play for the Grazer AK .

After moving to HIB Liebenau , he took part in the ISF World Championships (International School Sports Federation) in Shanghai with the GAK Academy in November 2003 and was accepted into the extended squad of GAK amateurs in autumn 2004. In spring 2005 he was already a regular player under coach Harry Gamauf with five goals in the current championship.

Soon coach Walter Schachner became aware of Junuzović. He let the talent train for a longer period of time with the professionals and changed it for the first time on May 14, 2005 in the championship game against SK Sturm Graz in the 74th minute. The successful debut in the professional team and another appearance in the game against FC Wacker Tirol were the first highlights of Junuzović's football career. With the fall season 2005 he became a regular player; he scored one goal each in the European Cup and championship.

After the end of the spring season 2007 Junuzović moved to the newly founded SK Austria Kärnten for two years . Then he signed a contract with Austria Vienna . He was voted Footballer of the Year in Austria in 2010.

In January 2012 he moved to SV Werder Bremen . He made his debut in the German Bundesliga a week later on February 5 in the away game of SV Werder at SC Freiburg (2-2). He scored his first goal in the Bundesliga on September 23, 2012 in the home game against VfB Stuttgart with the goal to make it 2-0. In the following years he was a top performer with the Bremen team. In 2015, before his contract expired, other clubs were interested in him. According to press reports, there were also offers that were more expensive than Werder Bremen's. In February 2015, he finally extended his contract period at Werder Bremen until 2018.

The Bundesliga season 2014/15 closed Junuzović with 15 templates as the second best assist donors from. He also scored six goals, five of them from a free kick.

Junuzović left Werder Bremen after the end of the 2017/18 season and returned to Austria, where he joined FC Red Bull Salzburg , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 2021.

National team

After several assignments in various ÖFB junior teams, he took part in the ÖFB team training camp in Dubai in January 2006. He made his debut in the national team in the game against Canada on March 1, 2006. In the 0-2 home defeat, he came in the 61st minute instead of Muhammet Akagündüz on the field.

In July 2007 he took part in the U-20 World Cup in Canada , in which Austria took fourth place.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Austria's squad. In the first game against Hungary he was on the starting line-up, but then had to be replaced with an injury. In the remaining two games he could then no longer be used. The team was eliminated as the last of the preliminary group.

On October 13, 2017, Junuzović announced his retirement from the national team after eleven years and 55 international matches. He made his last team appearance on June 11, 2017 in a 1-1 draw in the 2018 World Cup qualification in the away game against Ireland, in which he was substituted in the 79th minute by Florian Grillitsch . He scored the last of his seven team goals on March 29, 2016 in a 2-1 home defeat against Turkey.
