Marko Arnautović [ ˈmarko arˈnaʊtovɪtɕ ] (born April 19, 1989 in Vienna ) is an Austrian - Serbian football player . Since July 2019 he has been under contract with Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League .

Club career

youth

Arnautović, son of a Serb and an Austrian , began his career in his home district of Floridsdorf with the FAC . In 1998 he joined the youth team of the Vienna club FK Austria Wien . In the following six years he then played in chronological order for Vienna , again for Austria and finally also for Rapid , before returning to the FAC in 2004. The reason given was not his lack of talent - because this was attested to him at all of his stations - but his extroverted behavior and a tendency to stubbornness, which was pronounced at a young age, which made successful team integration impossible. His junior coaches at Rapid and Austria describe him as an "uncomfortable free spirit" and "behavioral problem".

In the course of his career, scouts from FC Twente from Enschede discovered him , who signed him in 2006 at the age of 17. In Viennese football, the change caused skepticism; the player was predicted to have little chance of success.

At the end of his first season, however, Arnautović was used in 2007 by the coach of the professional division, Fred Rutten , in two A-team games. With 22 goals in 24 games, he led the U-19s to the junior championship in the 2007/08 season. Between 2006 and 2008 he had played 32 youth games for Jong FC Twente and scored 27 goals before he was finally accepted into the circle of professional players .

FC Twente

Even before his first championship game, Arnautović was known as the "new Zlatan Ibrahimović " due to his similar stature, technical savvy and style of play . On May 14, 2007 he made his debut in a 2-0 defeat against PSV Eindhoven for FC Twente when he came on in the 77th minute for Kennedy Bakırcıoğlu . In the 2007/08 season he was still mainly for Jong FC Twente in use, but was used by coach Rutten 14 times in the Eredivisie and once in the UEFA Cup .

Arnautović as a player for FC Twente in 2008

Feyenoord Rotterdam then tried to poach Arnautović in the summer of 2008. Twente's new coach Steve McClaren , who had replaced Rutten who had migrated to FC Schalke 04 , declined this offer, after which Arnautović's contract period was extended to June 30, 2011. In the 2008/09 season, his breakthrough followed in the Netherlands. Together with Eljero Elia and Blaise Nkufo , he formed an offensive team and played with Twente for the championship title in the Eredivisie for a long time. In the end they became runner- up behind AZ Alkmaar . Arnautović came to 28 season appearances with twelve goals.

After a league game against Willem II Tilburg on March 14, 2009, Ibrahim Kargbo claimed he had been racially insulted by Arnautović. The Dutch Football Association then initiated proceedings against Arnautović and asked the alleged perpetrator and the accused to comment. The case was discussed extensively in the Dutch media and referred to as "Arnautogate". On March 23, 2009, the Dutch Football Association announced that the investigations had been discontinued due to insufficient evidence. Arnautović had previously assured several times that he had not made such a statement.

Transfer fight

Already during the 2008/09 season Arnautović was associated with clubs from Europe, making a change at the end of the season became apparent. First showed FC Schalke 04 with coach Fred Rutten a concrete interest in signing. After Rutten was released, however, the subject was off the table again.

In the summer transfer period of 2009 there was a real transfer battle between Chelsea FC and Inter Milan . First the interest of the Italian champions became public, after which Chelsea FC got involved in the negotiations. Although Inter were considered the most promising candidate for a move and Chelsea were only given outsider opportunities, the Dutch daily AD reported in May 2009 that a move to Chelsea was almost certain. Allegedly Arnautović had already reached an agreement with the Londoners who wanted to transfer twelve million euros as a transfer fee to Twente. As a result, the player was invited to London for a medical test, during which a stress fracture in the metatarsus was found. Previously, Arnautović was out at the end of the season with an ankle injury. As a result, Chelsea refrained from signing the player. In the following, the injury became the greatest obstacle to a transfer. Inter still wanted to sign Arnautović, but negotiated the transfer modalities with Twente until August. On August 5, 2009 Arnautović was loaned to the Italian champion for a year. If Arnautović had played a set number of games, a purchase option with a five-year contract would automatically have come into effect. According to media reports, the transfer fee would have been around 10 million euros and he could have become the most expensive Austrian footballer to date.

Inter Milan

Because of his injury, he missed the preparation for the 2009/2010 season and was not nominated for the group stage of the 2009 Champions League. After his convalescence, he completed a game for Inter for the first time on September 5, 2009 in a 3: 3 test match against Swiss second division club FC Lugano . Another test match against FC Piacenza followed , before he was allowed to sit on the bench for the first time in a competitive game against CFC Genoa on October 17, 2009 . On November 14, 2009, he scored his first goals for Inter in a 2-1 test match against Swiss second division club FC Vaduz .

When he was not appointed to the squad again in December 2009 by coach José Mourinho , the former national team coach Josef Hickersberger and Herbert Prohaska accused him of bad behavior and a lack of professional attitude. After Arnautović came to training three hours early, Mourinho gave him the chance to make his competitive debut in Serie A against Chievo Verona in January 2010 . At the press conference, Mourinho Arnautović attested the "character of a child". In total, he only played three times in Serie A, which Inter Milan won for the fifth time in a row.

On May 22, 2010 in the final of the Champions League between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich , which the Milanese won 2-0, Arnautović was the first time since Wolfgang Feiersinger in 1997 an Austrian was in the squad of a Champions League winner. However, he had not played a game in the competition.

SV Werder Bremen

Marko Arnautović, 2010

For the 2010/11 season Arnautović moved to the German Bundesliga for Werder Bremen . He signed a four-year contract. On August 28, 2010 he scored his first two Bundesliga goals in a 4-2 home win against 1. FC Köln . In the Champions League , he met his former club FC Twente for the first time on October 20, 2010. Arnautović made headlines again when he didn't play or when his behavior was criticized. Before the 33rd matchday he was suspended for a game because of an unauthorized visit to a discotheque by coach Thomas Schaaf . In the 2012/13 season, together with teammate Eljero Elia , he was released from training and play operations for the rest of the season from the 31st match day after the two had got into a police check at 3 a.m., which Arnautović proved to have exceeded the speed limit.

Stoke City

On September 2, 2013 Arnautović moved to Stoke City Football Club in the English Premier League . He signed a four-year contract. In his first season for Stoke City, he scored four goals and prepared ten more, making it the team's most successful assists. In his second season in England he scored twelve goals and gave six assists.

West Ham United

In July 2017, Arnautović moved to league rivals West Ham United , where he received a five-year contract. With a transfer fee of 20 million pounds , at the time the equivalent of around 22.3 million euros, he became the most expensive Austrian player to date. On August 19, 2017, he was excluded from the game in the Premier League game against Southampton FC after an elbow check in the 33rd minute. In two seasons with West Ham, he completed 59 games in the Premier League, in which he scored 21 goals.

Shanghai SIPG

In July 2019 he moved to Shanghai SIPG in China .

National team

Arnautovic with the national team in 2017

For the Austrian U-19 selection, he took part in the European Championship in July 2007 . His appearance during the tournament divided the Austrian sports journalists into two camps. His proponents praised his technical skills and anticipation, which were outstanding for his age . His critics, on the other hand, criticized his recklessness (he always succeeded in good actions, but he also often lost the ball on individual walks) and his unpredictability. So he saw the red card in the 86th minute in the second group game against the U-19 selection from Greece ; the game ended 1-1. Arnautović was then missing in the decisive game for promotion to the semi-finals against Portugal , which Austria lost 2-0. Previously, they had already lost the opening game against the eventual U-19 European champions Spain 2-0. The expectations of the team were not met. The reporting on Arnautović in the run-up to the final round and the fact that Marc Sand, a supposedly congenial strike partner, was in the squad of the Austrian team ensured high expectations .

Arnautović was widely regarded as a hope for the future of the Austrian national football team. The Austrian record international player Andreas Herzog said the following about Arnautović after a U-21 international match against Denmark in 2010 :

“There was a Krankl , a Duke , a Polster , a Prohaska , but Arnautović dwarfs them all when he realizes his potential. This is by far the best footballer who has run around on the football field in the last 30 years. "

- Andreas Herzog

On May 16, 2007 Arnautović was nominated for the first time by the then ÖFB team boss Josef Hickersberger for two international matches against Scotland and Paraguay "on demand" in the team squad. On October 2, 2008 he was appointed by the new team boss Karel Brückner in the squad for two World Cup qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Serbia , where he came on in the second half of the 1-1 draw for the Faroe Islands and made his international debut for Austria. In the international match against Sweden on February 11, 2009, Arnautović was in the starting line-up for the first time. On October 8, 2010, he scored his first two goals in the senior national team in a 3-0 home win in the qualifier for the Euro 2012 against Azerbaijan .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was part of the ÖFB squad and played in all three preliminary round matches over the full season. The team then retired as bottom of the group.

Others

His brother Danijel was considered the more talented player in his youth and was also under contract for the FAC and subsequently with Post SV and the lower class Dutch club HSC '21. After Marko Arnautović's move to Inter, Danijel ended his active career and worked exclusively as an advisor to his brother. In June 2011 he made his comeback as an active player when he switched to the German fifth division club FC Oberneuland .

On June 7, 2012, Arnautović married his girlfriend. His first daughter was born on July 16, 2012, and his second daughter in July 2015.

In June 2012 Arnautović verbally abused the police officer checking him in the course of a police check in Vienna , whereby Arnautović is also said to have made the statement “I earn so much, I can buy your life”. Two days later, the footballer apologized for these statements.

Arnautović says he is fluent in German , English , Italian , Serbian and Dutch .
