Xaver Schlager (born September 28, 1997 in Linz ) is an Austrian football player . The midfielder plays for VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga and is active for the Austrian national team .

Career

Xaver Schlager came to FC Red Bull Salzburg from SC St. Valentin in 2009 , where he initially played in the youth department. From 2011 he went through all years in the academy of "bulls".

In the winter break of 2014/15 he became a cooperation player for FC Liefering in the second division in order to gain his first experience in professional football. On February 27, 2015, under coach Peter Zeidler , he made his first appearance for FC Liefering in a 4-2 away win at SC Austria Lustenau . He was substituted on for Martin Rasner in the 90th minute of the game . On August 4, 2015, Schlager scored his first goal in professional football in the 2: 5 defeat against Kapfenberger SV .

On February 20, 2016, he was in the FC Red Bull Salzburg squad for the first time in the 2-0 home win against SCR Altach , but was not used. Xaver Schlager was the captain of the U-19s of FC Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Youth League . In the 2015/16 season, the team failed in the playoff at AS Roma . On April 30, 2013 Schlager was allowed to make his debut in the Austrian U-16 national team under team principal Rupert Marko in a 1-0 win in the friendly against his colleagues from Hungary . He came on as a substitute for Simon Pirkl in the 74th minute . This was followed by the 0-1 defeat in the second leg on May 2, 2013, another use in the second half of the game. Also under Rupert Marko, there were then five appearances in the Austrian U-17 national team .

Under team boss Hermann Stadler , Schlager played eight games in the Austrian U-19 national team . Including the qualification and the final round for the U-19 European Championship 2015 and the qualification for the U-19 European Championship 2016 . He scored his first goal in the team jersey on November 14, 2015 in the 2-0 win against Wales .

On March 30, 2015, he made his debut under Andreas Heraf in a friendly international match for the Austrian U-20 team against Mexico . For the U-21s, he was called up in August for the internationals against Russia and Finland. In November 2016, he and the team missed qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in Poland in 2017 in the playoff games .

In March 2018, the midfielder was appointed to the senior national team for the first time . He made his national team debut in the same month when he came on for Julian Baumgartlinger in the 90th minute of the friendly against Slovenia . He scored his first goal for the national team on November 18, 2018 in the Nations League game against Northern Ireland . Schlager met the Austrian 1-0 lead.
