The Austrian Football Association's Cup was played for the 81st time in the 2015/16 season. The official name of the competition was for the fifth time in a row "ÖFB Samsung-Cup". The winner is eligible to participate in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League play-off round . If the cup winner is already qualified for the UEFA Europa League or the UEFA Champions League, the fourth place in the championship takes part in the qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
Cup winner was in front of 10,300 spectators at the Klagenfurt Wörthersee Stadium of FC Red Bull Salzburg , who had just won the championship, with a 5: 0 victory against FC Admira Wacker Mödling . Salzburg was the first club in the history of the ÖFB Cup to win the double of championship and cup victory three times in a row since 1919 .
In addition, with Jonatan Soriano , who was successful three times in the final alone, Salzburg provided the top scorer with a superior ten goals. In the previous competition Soriano had shared the title with his teammates Alan and Marcel Sabitzer . Hans Krankl last scored three goals in a final in 1983 in the 5-0 away win of SK Rapid Wien at FC Wacker Innsbruck .
Attendees
64 teams take part in the first round. The teams of the Bundesliga and the teams of the First League are permanently qualified. Only one team per Bundesliga / First League club was allowed to compete. This means that their second teams are not eligible to play. This also applies to FC Liefering, which is under the control of FC Red Bull Salzburg. The remaining places were allocated to amateur clubs in the national associations according to a fixed key:
- 7 teams: Lower Austrian Football Association
- 6 teams: Upper Austrian Football Association , Styrian Football Association
- 5 teams: Vienna Football Association
- 4 teams: Burgenland Football Association , Carinthian Football Association , Salzburg Football Association , Tyrolean Football Association and Vorarlberg Football Association
The contingent of participants of each regional association included the winners of the respective regional cups 2014/15 and, if applicable, the losers of the relegation between the 2nd and 3rd performance level (first league / regional league ).

Note A1 Although FC Liefering is independent according to the statutes, since it is under the control of Red Bull, it is to be regarded as a second club of FC Red Bull Salzburg. The promotion to the first division was allowed by the ÖFB, but the club does not participate in the cup.
