The ÖFB Cup was played for the 46th time in the 1979/80 season. The winner for the 17th time was Wiener Austria, defending champion SSW Innsbruck had to admit defeat in the round of 16 Wiener Sport-Club / Post.

In the 45th Austrian Cup final, Vienna Austria and Salzburg Austria faced each other. The Viennese were champions this season with several rounds to go and were also the clear favorites after a 7-0 win over Salzburg in the latest league duel. The home team won the first leg in Lehen just 1-0 with a white goal. In the second leg in the Prater Stadium two weeks later, Austria was able to take a 1-0 lead after a penalty by Lettner against Prohaska.
