Gerhard Breitenberger (born October 14, 1954 ) is a former Austrian national soccer player from Golling an der Salzach .

Career

Gerhard Breitenberger went to elementary and secondary school in his hometown. He received his professional training at the technical college for mechanical engineering in Hallein . He made his Bundesliga debut in the 1974/75 season for SK VÖEST Linz . In 1976/77 the defender became an absolute regular player, played all season games for Linz and also made his debut on December 15, 1976 in the Austrian national team in a 3-1 victory over Israel in Tel Aviv. He successfully qualified with the national team for the 1978 World Cupin Argentina, was there even in the first four games, including wins against Spain and Sweden .

After the World Cup, Gerhard Breitenberger accepted an offer from the Belgian second division team KRC Mechelen , but returned to Austria after only a few months and went to Salzburg Austria . Breitenberger stayed here and played in the 1st division until 1984/85 . The greatest successes at club level were reaching the ÖFB Cup finals in 1980 and 1981, but both were just lost - as in 1978 with VÖEST. In the game year 1986/87 there was an engagement with FC Mölltal in the Carinthian regional league, where Günter Kronsteiner was a good friend of Breitenberger's player-coach. Gerhard Breitenberger lives in Salzburg today .

His son Gerhard Breitenberger was also a professional footballer.
