Erich Obermayer (born January 23, 1953 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian national soccer player . The Libero completed 50 international matches and took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and as a captain at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. For his parent club Austria , he played 543 times in the Bundesliga in 19 years and, in addition to eight championships , was able to reach the final in the 1978 European Cup .

Career

The trained machine fitter Erich Obermayer began his football career at the traditional favorite club FC Vienna . In the summer of 1969 he came to the then reigning Austrian champions FK Austria Wien and remained active for this club in the championship for the next 20 years. This era is one of the most successful of the violets. Overall, Erich Obermayer was able to become eight times Austrian champion and five-time winner of the ÖFB Cup as a player. He also enjoyed great success internationally as a defender: in 1978 he reached the final of the European Cup winners' Cup , with the final on May 3rd in Paris losing 4-0 to RSC Anderlecht . Only a year later, the defender reached the semi-finals of the European Cup with Austria, and in 1983 he achieved the same again in the cup competition .

As a regular player of the then most successful Austrian football club, Erich Obermayer made numerous appearances in the Austrian national team , between 1975 and 1985 he wore the team dress exactly 50 times. The defender took part with the national soccer team in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, where he finished seventh with the team and, among other things , threw the reigning world champion Germany 3-2 out of the competition. At this world championship he also scored his only goal in the national team with the honorary goal in the 1: 5 defeat. His greatest honor as a player, however, was given to him at the 1982 World Cup in Spain when he led the national team onto the field as captain, Austria reached 8th place.

After a total of 543 Bundesliga games - this figure was only exceeded by his club colleague and defense partner Robert Sara and later Heribert Weber - he ended his career in 1989 as one of the most successful Austrian footballers of the post-war period. As an assistant coach at Herbert Prohaska's side , he was still active with both Austria and the national team, but his commitment as head coach of the Floridsdorfer AC failed. After the football business, he earned his living as the owner of a gas station and the Café Libero in Meidling. He was voted into the eleven of the century by Austria fans in 2001 .
