The predecessor of the Cup of the Austrian Football Association , the Lower Austrian Cup , was held as an unofficial competition by the Lower Austrian Football Association (NFV) in the 1917/18 season, as participation was not mandatory. This was the first time since 1915 that a cup competition was announced, but participation was not mandatory this time either. The SK Rapid Wien and the Wiener AF were missing very prominent teams of the time.

The final was originally supposed to take place on June 30, 1918, but the finalists, Floridsdorfer AC and Wiener Amateur SV canceled the game due to bad weather, although the referee Linnich declared the sports field to be playable. As a result, both teams were excluded from the competition for not appearing in an association game and the trophy was not awarded. The two finalists agreed on a game for a cup they had donated themselves, which was played on July 7, 1918.

final

The final game was played on July 7, 1918 on the Sport-Club-Platz in Hernals . The game should have taken place a week earlier, both teams agreed, but without obtaining the consent of the association, to postpone the match due to the heavy rain. The Austrian Football Association ruled out the recognition of the game as a cup final game in advance and also refused to hand over the cup to the winner. The encounter was therefore played as a pure friendly game and led as an unofficial final. It is interesting that the Floridsdorfer AC won all of the finals of the Vienna Cup, which today are considered unofficial, but never won the official cup.
