history

Foundation and spin-off of Hertha

Rudolfshügel's founding team in 1902

The SpC Rudolfshügel was founded on September 2nd, 1902 with the club colors blue and white as the first football club in the working-class district of Favoriten. In the team at that time were the players Cervenka, Gmeiner, Peter Weihrauch, Karl Beck , Polla, Susa, Rußwurm, Blaha, Millacek, Mixa, Struber and Wilhelm Weihrauch . In December 1903 the club joined the Austrian Football Association . Only a year later there were internal disputes, so that some youth players broke away from the club and founded ASV Hertha Wien . The relationship between these two clubs was henceforth characterized by fierce rivalry; the Sport-Tagblatt wrote about this in June 1926:

“The area behind the Südbahnhof is actually divided into two areas in terms of football. The area to the right of Favoritenstrasse is Rudolfshügel's sphere of interest, and what lives to the left of Favoritenstrasse swears by the Hertha banner. In addition, of course, there are border guards who, depending on the situation in the championship table, run to one or the other club, but what holds on to character remains true to its colors, that is actually only its club, because even the colors of the two clubs are yes the same. Blue and white seems to be the flag of the favorites, and so both clubs have chosen this color [...]. The players and officials belong to almost the same class, so there is no reason for discord or argument, but the two clubs still cannot come together ... "

First championship in 1912

After taking a leading position in 2nd class from 1904 to 1907, the dark blues were allowed to move up to 1st class on September 25, 1907. SpC Rudolfshügel became one of the 12 founding members of Austria's first official football championship in the 1911/12 season. This was also where the first meetings with Hertha took place. The first championship derby for the “Favoritner Championship” turned out to be a shooting festival: The Rudolfshügler defeated Hertha on October 29, 1911 7-0. The first championship derby at Hertha-Platz was also won 1-0. Nevertheless, SpC Rudolfshügel finished 10th behind Hertha at the end of the season and had to go into relegation. Although they had as many points in the championship as ASV Hertha, they were only 10th, as they had one less win to record, which they protested against. The reason for this was that a Hertha victory was due to a game against First Vienna FC 1894 that was actually lost, but has been penalized . It was therefore decided to have a pre-qualification carried out. ASV Hertha competed against SpC Rudolfshügel, the loser had to go into relegation. Hertha won with a total score of 6: 2 from two games and thus remained in the first class. Ultimately, however, SpC Rudolfshügel could clearly prevail 6-0 on the Hohe Warte against SC Wacker Vienna from Meidling in the relegation.

From runner-up to relegated

In the years that followed, the Rudolfshügler did not face relegation difficulties, but were unable to play for the title for a long time. 1913 to 1915 succeeded the feat of occupying seventh place three times in a row, but only a year later they could book a new club record with fifth place in the table; the prelude to the most successful years in the history of the football club. In 1917 the championship title was narrowly missed. In the meantime they were even leaders and on the last day of the match were only one point behind Rapid Vienna and one point ahead of Floridsdorfer AC . While the two title rivals won high on the last match day (8: 0 and 4: 0), the Rudolfshügler did not get past a 0: 0 draw against Wiener AF at home and even slipped back to 3rd place. In 1918 they even awarded the championship title against the Vienna AF. A 4: 3 defeat on the penultimate match day meant the eventual fourth place in the table with only two points behind master Floridsdorf; a win - at break they were even 2-0 in front - would have made Rudolfshügler unassailable (if the game on the last day had also ended in their favor) for the other competitors.

In 1919, the favorites achieved the greatest success in the club's history with the runner-up title. During the entire season, however, the champions Rapid could never be endangered, even losing to the Hütteldorfer 0: 3 and 1: 7. In the cup, they made it to the semi-finals, where they were also defeated by the Rapidlers in front of 10,000 spectators. After the successes came the slow decline. In 1921 they finished third, a year later only eleventh. The descent followed in 1923. After a catastrophic season, the Rudolfshügler finished 13th and last place and were relegated for the first time in the club's history.

Promotion, the last few years in the first division and dissolution in 1934

In the 2nd class south, the SpC Rudolfshügel managed to get up again in an impressive way. They remained undefeated in 22 games and won 19 games. In 1925, the club returned to the first division - for the first time it was a professional division , in which, however, it was initially unable to assert oneself. In the first year they finished last with only 7 points (relegation suspended), a year later the penultimate place - ahead of Hertha, which was relegated - with 12 points, before they also entered the second division in 1927 with only 4 points in 24 games descent.

In October 1927, the SpC Rudolfshügel was finally suspended by the association, as he could not pay outstanding salaries "in a considerable amount" to the players Englert and Ambros. The association could not recover economically for a long time and joined the VAFÖ in the summer of 1928 . After a few seasons in the VAFÖ championship, the club finally dissolved completely in 1934, the majority of the players transferred to 1. FFC Vorwärts 06 Vienna .
