action

Steve and Alexandra lead a marriage that has degenerated into a community of convenience. Their children Emma and Sam do not notice anything and grow up well protected. Alexandra is extremely unhappy because her smug, self-loving and selfish husband neglects her and treats her like a small child. Over the years, Alexandra had the house equipped with security locks and all sorts of other burglar-proof installations. The supplier for this was the neighbor Bill, whom Steve cannot stand and who secretly thinks he is useless.

On Steve's birthday, Alexandra announces a surprise for the evening. It seems like a perfect day in his eyes because he's getting promoted at his place of work. When he comes home in the evening, the front door is ajar and the entire house is pitch black, as Alexandra has removed all lightbulbs. He discovers a video camera and a video cassette. Alexandra recorded a birthday greeting together with Emma and Sam, which she is sending away for the next part of the video.

Alexandra starts to strip, which Steve really likes. She talks to him all the time and it turns out that she knows exactly his habits and idiosyncrasies. The mood changes suddenly when Alexandra, only wearing a bra and panties, points a gun at the camera. Distraught, Steve wants to make a phone call, but the line is dead. The battery has been removed from his cell phone and instead he finds a cartridge. In the video, Alexandra begins the merciless reckoning with Steve and their marriage. She tells him that both of her breasts have to be amputated because of breast cancer. After this amputation, in her opinion, she will no longer be a woman in Steve's eyes, as her breasts are one of the few assets Steve has. But she resolves this story as a bad joke. When she tries to pierce her nipples, a male hand suddenly appears on her bare breasts. Steve is furious. She accuses him of being just a piece of meat to him. Only her body mattered. Constant involuntary sexual intercourse or the introduction of a cucumber without their consent have also encouraged them to do so.

After she completely exposes herself and explains to him that the video has only been partially recorded and has been live for some time, she tells him that she worked as a prostitute in her own house during the day. Completely horrified and angry, he then has to watch as Bill has sex with a visibly enjoying Alexandra. Since Alexandra had all the locks changed and Steve is trapped in his own house, he breaks through a wall of the row house in a rage and is in Bill's house, where everything was filmed. He's waiting for him half-naked with a pistol. Steve will not see or hear anything from Alexandra and his children in his life, Alexandra has made sure of that.

After a night in police custody, he only has one thing left: his wife's video. He ends up sitting drunk and satisfying himself in front of the television showing Alexandra's sex with Bill.

criticism

“The study of the destruction of a life together, down to the smallest detail. The (almost) two-person piece, worn by excellent actors, is coherent, amazes in terms of camera technology and the sophisticated sound design, with the cryptic staging of codes, even on the apparently healthy birthday morning, suggesting the approaching disaster. A grueling and fascinating film. "

“A mentally handicapped, frustrated woman strikes out against her caring and well-meaning husband in this gloomy marital horror drama by Australian author Rolf de Heer (" Bad Boy Bubby "). The disaster arises from a supposedly intact environment, and the more unprepared the viewer approaches, the more violently it is destroyed. Excellent performance makes the psychological war understandable and predestines the film to be a tip for discerning thriller friends. "
