The Austrian Football Association's Cup was played for the 82nd time in the 2016/17 season. The official name of the competition was for the fifth time in a row "ÖFB Samsung-Cup".
The defending champion was FC Red Bull Salzburg , which has won both the ÖFB Cup and the Austrian Football Championship over the past three years . Salzburg also prevailed 2-1 (0-0) in the 2016/17 final against SK Rapid Wien . With this they set a new record, because never before has a club managed to win the cup four times in a row. The fact that FC Red Bull Salzburg also won the double (championship and cup) for the fourth time in a row makes the success even more valuable. Óscar García was the first Salzburg coach to successfully defend the cup victory.
The beneficiary of the success of Salzburg was SCR Altach , which was able to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. In contrast to the past, the cup finalist will no longer take part in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, but rather the fourth place in the championship.
Attendees
64 teams took part in the first round. The teams of the Bundesliga and the teams of the First League were permanently qualified. Only one team per Bundesliga / First League club was allowed to compete. This means that their second teams are not eligible to play. This also applies to FC Liefering, which is under the control of FC Red Bull Salzburg. The remaining places were allocated to amateur clubs in the national associations according to a fixed key:
- 7 teams: Lower Austrian Football Association
- 6 teams: Upper Austrian Football Association , Styrian Football Association
- 5 teams: Vienna Football Association
- 4 teams: Burgenland Football Association , Carinthian Football Association , Salzburg Football Association , Tyrolean Football Association and Vorarlberg Football Association
The contingent of participants of each regional association included the winners of the respective regional cups 2015/16 and, if applicable, the losers of the relegation between the second and third performance level (first league / regional league ).

Note 1According to the statutes, FC Liefering is independent, but since it is under the control of Red Bull, it is to be regarded as the second club of FC Red Bull Salzburg. The promotion to the first division was allowed by the ÖFB, but the club does not participate in the cup.
Note 2 USV Rudersdorf participates as a finalist of the Burgenland Football Cup, as the cup winner SC / ESV Parndorf 1919 is already qualified by his placement in the Regionalliga Ost
Note 3 FC Kitzbühel takes part as a finalist in the Tyrolean Football Cup, as the cup winner WSG Wattens is qualified through promotion to the First League
Note 4 The Dornbirner SV takes part as a finalist of the Vorarlberg Soccer Cup, as the cup winner FC Dornbirn 1913 is already qualified by his placement in the Regionalliga West
Note 5 As champions, SV Wienerberg, FC Bergheim and ATUS Ferlach have renounced promotion to the regional league

Semifinals
The following teams qualified for the semi-finals:
Bundesliga (3) | First division (1) |
---|---|
LASK Linz was in the semifinals of the ÖFB Cup for the first time since the 1998/99 season . At that time, the Linz team were even able to move into the final with a 2-0 away win at SK Rapid Wien , where they had to admit defeat to SK Sturm Graz 2: 4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The semi-finals were drawn on April 9, 2017 in the ORF broadcast Sport am Sonntag . The drawing was carried out by Florian Grillitsch . The games were scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Schedule of the semi-finals
In the semi-finals, the finalists from last year's competition, FC Admira Wacker Mödling and FC Red Bull Salzburg, met. From the start, Salzburg left no doubt as to who will leave the field as the winner and Japanese legionnaire Takumi Minamino made it 0: 1 in the seventh minute. Wanderson increased to 0: 2 after just under half an hour. With the 0: 3 by Konrad Laimer, who shaped the game of the guests, shortly after the break, the game was finally decided. In the end, Salzburg won through Valentino Lazaros 0: 4 and another goal from Minamino with 5: 0, with which they achieved the same result as in the final of the previous year.
The drama of the second semifinals was unbeatable. The leaders of the First League, LASK Linz, not only managed to keep the game open at Rapid Vienna, they also had better chances to score, but missed them or failed on the goal post. Only after the break did the home side get better into the game. At the beginning of the legendary Rapid quarter of an hour , the Green-Whites took a 1-0 lead through Thomas Murg. However, Linz did not give up and in the first minute of stoppage time they managed to equalize through René Gartler. After a defensive mistake by Linz, Joelinton was able to fix Rapid Wien's 2-1 victory in the third minute of stoppage time.

Endgame
In the final of the Cup of the Austrian Football Association, SK Rapid Wien and the current champions FC Red Bull Salzburg faced each other. Salzburg were not only the defending champions, they could also point to their victories in the past three years. Salzburg have been unbeaten in the cup competition for 23 games. The last defeat was on May 7, 2013 (1: 2 at home in the semifinals against the eventual cup winner FC Pasching ).
The last cup win at Rapid Vienna was a long time ago. In 1994/95 they were able to defeat DSV Leoben 1-0 in the final. Most recently, the green-whites, who took fifth place in the championship, qualified for the final in 2004/05, but were defeated by FK Austria Wien with 1: 3 goals. In the current championship there were three wins for Salzburg (2: 1 and twice 1: 0) and one draw (0: 0).
The Salzburg team remained victorious in the 24th cup game in a row and with a 2-1 victory not only won the Austrian Football Cup for the fourth time in a row, but also won the double for the fourth time in a row.
At least for the time being it was the last game in the "ÖFB-Samsung-Cup", as the electronics group is withdrawing after six years of partnership. However, the new sponsor of the competition is already at the door: the long-term partner of the ÖFB, Uniqa insurance, will take over the sponsorship from the coming season.
