Arnór Ingvi Traustason (born April 30, 1993 in Keflavík ) is an Icelandic football player on the position of midfielder . With the Icelandic national team he took part in the 2016 European Football Championship in France .

Club career

Career start at home

Arnór Ingvi Traustason was born on April 30, 1993 in the port city of Keflavík in southwest Iceland. He began his career as a football player in the junior division of Ungmennafélag Njarðvíkur , who are underclassed in football and are especially known for their basketball department. He was trained by the Icelandic trainer Freyr Sverrisson and was used early on for the club from Njarðvík in various tournaments and championships. During this time he won several titles with the youth and went through all youth leagues until he made his move to the junior division of Keflavík ÍF in November 2008 . At the club from the neighboring town he also asserted himself in the youth field and made his debut in an Icelandic youth national team for the first time in 2009. As a 16-year-old, he then made the jump to the men's team of Keflavík ÍF and completed his first competitive game on February 27, 2010 in a league cup encounter against Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur .

On June 21, 2010 he sat for the first time in a league game on the bench of the professionals. After he had been sitting on the bench without using the end of July once again, put it Willum Þór Thorsson at a 1: 2 away defeat against Fram Reykjavik 13 September 2010 for the first time and sent him off after 83 minutes for Andri Steinn Birgisson on Matchfield. In the following three last league games of the 2010 game year , Arnór Ingvi Traustason made two more short appearances and was again on the bench without an action. In the last season duel against ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar , he scored the goal to make it 2-0 in the 75th minute in a 4-1 win. With Keflavík ÍF he ended the year in sixth place in the table in the middle of the table.

After European clubs had become aware of the young Icelander, he completed a one-week trial training session at the English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion in February 2011 together with compatriot and teammate Ásgrímur Rúnarsson , which, however, did not end in a contract offer for either of them. In the following game year 2011 , Arnór Ingvi Traustason was on the way to becoming a regular, but only played once over the full game in a total of 15 league appearances. As in the previous year, he also scored a league goal in 2011; overall he scored twice in 20 competitive appearances this year. At the end of the season he was voted Youngster of the Year. This year he was involved with the Keflavík ÍF for a long time in the relegation battle, but in the end secured the relegation as eighth place.

As a loan player to Norway

In the meantime, he started the 2012 game year as a regular under Zoran Daníel Ljubicic , who was previously primarily responsible for the club's youth work . He was used in every league game up to the 15th round in mid-August 2012 and scored four goals for his team. Three days after his last league appearance, he moved together with Sigurbergur Elísson on loan to Sandnes Ulf in the Norwegian first class , where they met their compatriots Steinþór Freyr Þorsteinsson and Óskar Örn Hauksson . Under the former professional Asle Andersen , he was never used for the full game, but still came to regular longer assignments in the Tippeligaen. Sandnes Ulf was already in the relegation zone when he moved in August; that didn't change much until the end of the season, when the club was in 14th place in the relegation against Ullensaker / Kisa IL . This was decided by the team with a total score of 7: 1 from the first and second leg, with the Icelander also making a short appearance in the first leg and providing an assist. In the previous league, Arnór Ingvi Traustason played in ten championship games, mostly in attacking midfield, and then returned to Iceland.

There he came with his regular club Keflavík ÍF, who had finished the season in ninth place, finally to the breakthrough as a regular player and was used by Ljubicic and his successor Kristján Guðmundsson until the end of the season in 19 of the 22 league games. The attacking midfielder scored four goals. Equally dangerous he was in the Icelandic League Cup when he played in four of the seven games of the Keflavík ÍF and also contributed four goals, including a hat trick in a 6-1 win over Leiknir Reykjavík . While he was eliminated here with the team as sixth in Group 3, he only came ninth in the league with the team in the final ranking of Pepsideild 2013 . In February 2013, the association had already extended its contract term by one year to the end of 2014. Once again he was voted Youngster of the Year at the end of the season.

Change to Sweden

After being in contact with the Swedish first division club IFK Norrköping in July 2013 and, according to transfermarkt.de , having played a game for their U-21 team at the beginning of July, he moved to Sweden after the Icelandic season ended in October 2013. He got the number 9 on his back. He made his competitive debut months later when he came on the field for Rawez Lawan in the cup game against AFC United on April 9, 2014 from the 79th minute of play . After he came to another brief assignment a week later, he was eliminated with the team in the group stage of the Swedish Football Cup 2013/14 . Due to injury, Arnór Ingvi Traustason missed the start of the 2014 game year and was only introduced to the professional business by Jan Andersson from mid-May 2014 . He made his competitive debut for the Swedes on May 15, when he was used in the central midfield in the 3-0 home defeat against Falkenbergs FF from the 55th minute. In the further course of the season, his used positions varied often, with most of the time he was acted as a right winger.

As such, he scored his first competitive goal for the Swedes in a 5-3 loss to Djurgårdens IF on July 14 and contributed an assist in the same game. On September 15, he was involved in all three goals in the 3-1 home win over IF Brommapojkarna , once as a shooter and twice as an assistant. He finished the season with the team in twelfth place in the table, with the team involved in the relegation battle for a long time and ranked on a relegation place shortly before the end. Arnór Ingvi Traustason himself appeared in 18 league games, scored three goals and prepared another five. In the 2014/15 Swedish Football Cup , the Icelander played in all five IFK Norrköping games and had a record of three goals. With the team he was eliminated from the current tournament in the quarter-finals against league competitor BK Häcken .

Championship and Supercup season in Sweden

In the 2015 game year , Arnór Ingvi Traustason advanced to become one of the top performers of the Östergötland club . After two defeats and only four points from the first four championship games, IFK Norrköping put down a series of 13 unbeaten games. In the fight with IFK Göteborg and AIK Solna for the Swedish championship, IFK Norrköping finally prevailed against the competition. In the end, IFK Norrköping ranked first after 20 wins, six draws and four defeats from 30 championship games with three points ahead of the closest rival. Arnór Ingvi Traustason was used by Andersson in 29 of these games in the left midfield and had a record of seven hits and eleven assists, with 18 points scorer ranking fifth in the league-wide list. With his eleven assists, he scored only one less than the leader of this list in 2015, Viktor Claesson . Subsequently, he was also used in the 3-0 victory over runner-up and cup winners IFK Göteborg in the Swedish Supercup and was subsequently courted by various European clubs. These included the English Premier League club Aston Villa , which, however, refrained from buying the Icelandic.

As a record transfer to SK Rapid Vienna

Equipped with a contract valid until the end of 2017, he started with IFK Norrköping as the reigning champions in the 2016 game year , in which he was no less successful from the start. He was used in the first nine games of the season, scoring two goals and preparing another three goals for his teammates. He also played three games in the 2015/16 Swedish Football Cup , where he scored a goal in a 4-0 win over Östersunds FK and was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals against Malmö FF . After being linked to SK Rapid Wien during the winter transfer period , the Icelandic's move to Austria was officially fixed on May 12, 2016. After Guðmundur Torfason , who played for the Viennese from 1988 to 1989 , he is the second Icelander in the club's history. At the capital club, he signed a contract that ran until summer 2020; the rumored transfer fee should have been between two and 2.3 million euros , which would mean a record transfer fee for SK Rapid Wien.

Back to Sweden via Greece

After a season at Rapid, in which he only made 22 league games due to injuries, he was loaned to AEK Athens in July 2017 in Greece . After only being used there three times in the league, he moved permanently back to Sweden to Malmö FF in January 2018 , where he received a contract that ran until June 2021.

National team career

Arnór Ingvi Traustason gained his first experience in an Icelandic national football team in 2009 when he first appeared for the Icelandic U-17 juniors . He came under coach Gunnar Guðmundsson in two qualifying games for the U-17 European Championship 2010 against the age colleagues from Wales and Russia . When he was third in the group in this qualifying round, he was eliminated with the Icelanders before the subsequent elite round and only barely progressed among the best third-placed finishers. It then took almost two years before the young midfielder was reappointed for the Icelandic association. Under coach Kristinn Rúnar Jónsson he made the leap into the Icelandic U-19 squad and made his debut in early September 2011 in two friendly internationals against Estonia . He then played three qualifying matches for the U-19 European Championship in 2012 in October 2011 , but remained goalless in all of his five games. As with the U-17 team, he retired from the current qualification early on after the first qualifying round as the last of Group 4 with the U-19.

Another year went by before Arnór Ingvi Traustason was called up for the first time in the Icelandic U-21 national team and made his debut in the final qualifying group match for the U-21 European Championship . Eyjólfur Sverrisson used him in the match against Belgium from the start and had him replaced in the 59th minute by the future Prussian Münster player Emil Atlason . After a friendly game in February 2013, Sverrisson used him regularly in varying midfield positions in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2015 , where he was in seven of the eight qualifying games for Iceland between March 2013 and September 2014. Here he scored his only goal for the U-21 national team in a 2-0 win over the Kazakh U-21 national team. With the team he finished the group stage behind France in second place and came third-best runner-up in the subsequent play-offs. In addition to another friendly international match in June 2014, he played in these two play-off games in Denmark , but was only eliminated with the team due to the away goals rule and thus barely qualified for the European Championship finals in the Czech Republic .

It would take a little more than a year before Arnór Ingvi Traustason, meanwhile Icelandic champion and Supercup winner, was called up for two friendlies against Poland and Slovakia in the Icelandic national team by the coaching team Lars Lagerbäck and Heimir Hallgrímsson . While he played in the 2: 4 defeat against Poland on November 13, 2011 from the start and over the entire game, he was only used as a substitute in the 1: 3 defeat against Slovakia. In his third international match, a 1-0 win over Finland , he came on the left winger over the first half and scored the winning goal in the 17th minute. The midfielder was also involved in the following game against the United Arab Emirates and was only not used in the game against the US national team. For two more friendly international appearances against Denmark and Greece he was also brought into the Icelandic senior team and was used in both games, where he also scored a goal.

With the national team, he took part in the European Championship for the first time in June and July 2016 . In the third preliminary round match against Austria in 2016 , Arnór Ingvi Traustason scored the 2-1 winner for the Icelanders as a substitute in stoppage time. Iceland reached the round of 16 as runner-up in Group F. There it was used a second time in the final minutes. The team was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

He was also on the Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Arnór Ingvi Traustason came on as a substitute for Birkir Bjarnason against Croatia in the last minute of the game .
