Rasmus Bengtsson (born June 26, 1986 in Malmö ) is a Swedish football player . The central defender made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2009 .

Career

Breakthrough in Sweden

Bengtsson comes from the youth of Malmö FF . Since he could not prevail there at first, the central defender was loaned to Trelleborgs FF together with Andreas Wihlborg . In the second division both should collect match practice. At the end of the 2006 season, in which he was used in 19 games and scored two goals, he was able to celebrate promotion to the Allsvenskan with the club and was finally signed by TFF.

In his first season in the Swedish elite series, Bengtsson made it into the starting line-up ten times and was able to recommend himself for the Swedish U21 national team. Shortly before the game against Ireland's junior team in October 2007, however, he injured himself so that he had to forego a use and, ironically, was replaced by his club-mate Wihlborg. In February 2008 he was part of the national team at a tournament in Portugal, but was not used in the 1-0 win over the Ukrainian U21 team. In the final game of the tournament on February 6th against the Portuguese U21 team, he made his debut, but could not prevent the 3-0 defeat.

After Bengtsson was able to fight for a regular place at TFF in the 2008 season and was used in 28 of the 30 season games and was also able to assert himself in the U21 selection, he aroused the interest of the competition. At first there was speculation about a move to FC Copenhagen and a transfer to the Swedish league rival Hammarby IF was reported, in the end he decided to wait at least until the summer transfer period after the U-21 European Championship and stay with TFF.

On December 16, 2008, national coach Lars Lagerbäck announced the line-up for a US tour of the Swedish national team, which includes other debutants such as Rasmus Elm and Patrik Ingelsten and Bengtsson. On January 28 of the following year he made his debut in the 1-0 victory over the Mexican national team with a goal by Alexander Farnerud on the side of Patrik Anttonen , Mattias Bjärsmyr and Adam Johansson in the defense chain of the national team. In the following season he was one of the regular players in both the league and the U-21 national team, so that at the end of May the selection coaches Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson nominated him for the U21 European Championship finals in his own country in the summer, where he was one of eleven players with senior international experience. In the course of the tournament, he was used in all four games until he failed with the selection in the semifinals on penalties to England .

Change abroad

For the 2009/10 Bundesliga season , Bengtsson moved to the German Bundesliga club Hertha BSC for around 500,000 euros . For the Berlin club, where he received the shirt number "22", he made his competitive debut in qualifying for the Europa League 2009/10 against Brøndby IF . In the 1: 2 defeat against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on matchday 5, he played for the first time in the Bundesliga . On September 17, 2009 Bengtsson made his European debut when he was in the first Europa League group game against FK Ventspils in the starting eleven and was not substituted. Under coach Lucien Favre and his successor Friedhelm Funkel , however, he was only used sporadically. For the Berlin team, he made a total of six appearances in the Bundesliga. The game against Ventspils was also his only Europa League appearance.

Bengtsson moved for the 2010/11 season to FC Twente Enschede , who had previously won the Dutch championship. There he was initially on the bench and only made headlines when he injured his compatriot Emir Bajrami in training in mid-September . After making his debut in the Eredivisie against ADO Den Haag in October , he continued to sit mainly on the substitutes' bench and was not part of the team on some match days. As the Dutch champions, Enschede qualified directly for the Champions League . Bengtsson made his Champions League debut on October 20, 2010, when he came on as a substitute for Peter Wisgerhof after 27 minutes in the third group match against SV Werder Bremen . On November 2, 2010 Bengtsson came in the fourth group game, also against SV Werder; this time he was in the starting eleven. It should also be his last appearance in the Champions League so far. In the league he was used in ten games. In the following season there were 13 games, with Bengtsson playing over 90 minutes in eight of these games. In the Champions League qualification , Twente failed to Benfica Lisbon, whereby Bengtsson was not used in any game. Bengtsson made four appearances in the Europa League .

That Bengtsson under coach Steve McClaren second choice was, was also at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , when he participated in the of his former shirt number "5" NAC Breda fetched Robbert Schilder had to give and the "17" received. At the beginning of the season he was only used irregularly, but gained a regular place in the fall. In the summer of the following year he even became team captain , he led the team around Luc Castaignos , Quincy Promes , Roberto Rosales , Dušan Tadić and Robbert Schilder to third place in the table in the following season. At the same time, he had played his way back to the national team. The club, which got into financial problems, was only able to build on the successes of previous years to a limited extent in the following season, when the team had regularly qualified for the European Cup, and - also due to point deductions - slipped into the middle third of the table in the course of the 2014/15 season from.

Return to Sweden

In the middle of the current season, Bengtsson moved to Sweden at the end of March 2015 just before the end of the winter changeover period and returned to his youth club Malmö FF. He signed a contract with the reigning champion until the end of 2019.
