Career start and national team debut

In the following seasons he was used regularly and thus helped the club to establish itself in the top group of the Swedish elite class.

In the course of the 2007 season , Elm Tommy Söderberg , the coach of the Swedish U21 team , attracted attention. On August 21 of the year he made his debut in the junior national team when he came on as a substitute for Andrés Vásquez in the contested 3: 4 defeat by the Welsh U21 team in the 64th minute . In the following games in 2007 he was part of the squad, but was only in the starting line-up twice. At the same time, he reached the final of the Swedish Cup against IFK Gothenburg with his club team . At the side of his brothers, goals from César Santin , who was twice successful, and Patrik Ingelsten achieved a 3-0 win and thus the first title win. In the following season he dominated the Allsvenskan with his team and contributed to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup as national champion in 27 games of the season in which he scored five goals . In addition, KFF reached the cup final against IFK Gothenburg again. In the final he was in the starting line-up before being replaced by his brother David in the 79th minute. He missed the possible double due to a defeat on penalties .

At the beginning of 2009 national coach Lars Lagerbäck nominated Elm for a North American tour of the senior national team. On January 24 of the year he made his debut as a substitute in the 3-2 defeat by the US national team , when he replaced Andreas Dahl from the 62nd minute of play . As a result, he was able to establish himself in the selection team and was also used as part of the qualification for the 2010 World Cup . In addition, he was in the starting line-up in all twelve league games for KFF until the summer break. Although he had not played a game for the U-21 selection in the calendar year, the selection coach Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson nominated him at the end of May for the U-21 European Championship finals in his own country in the summer. At the tournament he played in all four games of the Swedes, in the first game against Belarus he scored the goal of the interim 1-1 equalizer in a 5-1 win. In the semi-finals, the team failed on penalties to England .

Change abroad

Through his appearances in the national teams Elm drew attention to himself across national borders. At the end of August 2009 he moved to the Dutch honor division for the reigning champions AZ Alkmaar . He signed a four-year contract with the club from the province of North Holland . Here he was a regular player in the following years. Initially still active in the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 in the junior selection, he soon became a permanent member of the senior national team. With the selection team, however, he missed qualifying for the 2010 World Cup .

With his club Elm occupied places in the top third of the table of the Dutch championship and qualified regularly for the European Cup. At the same time, he stayed in the national team, where he fluctuated between starting eleven and substitute bench. As the best runner-up in the group, the national team qualified directly behind the Dutch national team for the 2012 European Championship finals . There he was in the starting line-up for the defeats against the Ukraine and England , after the elimination was already certain early on, national coach Erik Hamrén decided not to play Elms in the last group game against France .

After the tournament Elm moved to Russia and joined CSKA Moscow . With five goals he contributed to winning the Russian championship title in his first year. In the summer of 2013 he was temporarily injured. Shortly after his recovery, he was on the field for the World Cup qualifier against Germany in Berlin , where he scored the equalizer for a 4-4 draw after trailing 4-0 in stoppage time. A few days later he was injured again. Ultimately, there were 21 league games for him by the end of the season, and again he won the championship title with the team. After a disease of the gastrointestinal tract, which resulted in stomach bleeding under exertion, he missed the entire first half of the 2014/15 season. As a result, the club and the player dissolved his contract in January 2015 by mutual agreement.

Return to Sweden

A few days after terminating his contract in Russia, Elm signed a contract with his former club Kalmar FF that ran until the summer of 2016. Due to ongoing health problems, Elm only played 72 games in four years, which is why he ended his career at the end of the 2018/19 season.
