Walter Altmann (born December 24, 1984 ) is an Austrian football referee and belongs to the Tyrolean Football Association .

Career

He began his referee career in 2004. The leap into the Regionalliga West , the third highest level in Austria, was achieved after just six years. He led his first game on April 17, 2010 when SV Seekirchen played against VfB Hohenems (6-1). On August 5th, 2011 he directed his first game in the ÖFB Cup with the encounter between FC Dornbirn and SV Stegersbach .

His career as an assistant referee in the Bundesliga began with the 2010/11 season, in which he made his debut in the game First Vienna FC against SV Grödig (3: 2) alongside Dominik Ouschan . On May 25, 2011 he was allowed to appear for the first time in the Austrian Bundesliga at the side of Thomas Einwaller in the game SV Ried against SV Kapfenberg (2-0) as assistant referee.

The major highlights in Altmann's career so far were the 300th Vienna Derby on February 18, 2012 alongside Thomas Einwaller and the UEFA Europa League play-off match between Sparta Prague and FC Vaslui on August 25, 2011 the site of Thomas Einwaller.

On April 17, 2012 Altmann celebrated his debut as a referee in the first division at the game SKN St. Pölten against SV Grödig at the age of 27 . He was in charge of the game as part of the qualification for the Bundesliga referee squad and required three yellow cards . On July 1, 2012, Altmann was officially included in the roster of the Austrian Bundesliga referees and has so far managed 98 games in the first division and 20 games in the ÖFB Cup.

On September 21, 2017, Walter Altmann was promoted to referee in the highest Austrian soccer division. He has been nominated as referee for 22 games until he was officially appointed FIFA referee on January 1, 2020.
