Alfred "Gigi" Ludwig

Alfred Ludwig - better known under the nickname "Gigi" Ludwig - (born July 26, 1950 in Vienna ) was General Director ( CEO ) of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) from March 1, 2009 to July 31, 2016 . With 2,111  clubs and 592,375 active members, the ÖFB is the largest Austrian sports association (as of December 6, 2007).

Life

After graduating from high school , Ludwig trained as a secondary school teacher , which he successfully completed. From 1970 he worked as a teacher . As a part-time job he worked as a journalist in the sports department of the Kronen Zeitung , with the main focus of his work in the soccer field . As a result of this activity, he was also appointed press spokesman on the Executive Committee of the School Football Association in 1976 . Ludwig carried out this activity until 1987.

In September 1981, the then President of the ÖFB and Federal Minister for Buildings and Technology, Karl Sekanina , brought Ludwig to the ÖFB as press chief. For this he gave up both his learned profession as a teacher and his part-time job as a journalist. After the resignation of Karl Sekanina (1982) Ludwig was confirmed in his function by the interim presidents Herbert Raggautz and Heinz Gerö. After approval by the ÖFB board, Alfred Ludwig was appointed general secretary of the ÖFB on January 1, 1986.

During Ludwig's tenure as Secretary General, among other things, the successful application for the 2008 European Football Championship fell .

After Leo Windtner took office as President on February 28, 2009, Alfred Ludwig was promoted to General Director of the Austrian Football Association on March 1, 2009.

On October 7, 2009, after a lawsuit before the Constitutional Court , Ludwig had to comment that the ÖFB has different ticket prices for men and women. The case of “sexual discrimination ” now concerns not only the Austrian Parliament , but also the EU Equal Opportunities Commission. The outcome of the proceedings is open, but the different ticket prices were set on instructions from Ludwig.

During the team boss search in 2011, Ludwig received media coverage again. For example, Austria's successful coach at the U-20 World Cup in Canada , and also in club football at Ried , Paul Gludovatz , excluded from becoming team boss due to personal differences with Ludwig. The ÖFB would not decide based on experience and quality. Also do not respect the ÖFB, such as B. the DFB, on a consistent football philosophy. While the U-20 played with a 3-3-3-1, the U-21 played a 4-3-3.

Ludwig retired on July 31, 2016 . He will be succeeded by the previous director of organization and finance, Bernhard Neuhold .

Alfred Ludwig has been married since 1979 and has two children.
