Jakobus Willem "Co" Rentmeester (also Ko Rentmeester ; born February 28, 1936 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch rower and photojournalist .

Live and act

Rentmeester was first known as a rower. Together with Peter Bakker , he took 3rd place at the European Rowing Championships in 1959 in Mâcon, France . After that he was part of the Dutch Olympic team at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . In the early 1960s he emigrated to the United States to study photography at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles . In the following years he became known as a photojournalist .

After completing his bachelor's degree in fine art photography, he began working as a freelance photographer for Life magazine in 1965 . His first assignment was to cover the Watts riot in Los Angeles. Rentmeester had managed to photograph some of the particularly dramatic moments of the uprising, which earned him great recognition.

Was in Asia between 1966 and 1969 to report primarily on the Vietnam War . He managed to shoot some special images for the western media. His photo of an M48 commander looking through the aiming device was named press photo of the year 1967. Rentmeester's picture was the first color photograph to receive this award. After being wounded by a Vietnamese sniper near Saigon , he returned to the United States. In 1972 his pictures from Indonesia were exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

In the following years he received several orders from leading magazines in the USA. Co Rentmeester is best known for his career as a photojournalist . A large part of his photographic work also relates to advertising photography , he shot commercials for television and cinema .

Today he experiments with modern digital technology and makes use of image processing software to enhance his photos and enhance their effect.

Awards

  • 1967: Press Photo of the Year ("World Photo Foundation")
  • 1972: He won the “Magazine Photographer” award and “Best Sports Photo” award from the World Press Photo Foundation.
  • 1976: won the New York Art Directors Club award for his photo essay on Thomas Jefferson for Exxon Corporation.
  • 1979: He was awarded in Holland by the "World Press Photo Foundation" for a color photo report about racing sailing in Morocco, which is held in the Sahara.
  • 1980: Received the Missouri University of Journalism Award for an essay on the US Air Force.

Various awards followed, most recently in 2001 Rentmeester received the "KLM Paul Huf Award".
