Valentino Lazaro (born March 24, 1996 in Graz ) is an Austrian football player on the position of midfielder , who can also play as a defender or a striker . He is on loan from Inter Milan to Borussia Mönchengladbach and is an Austrian national player .

Valentino Lazaro, son of an Angolan father and an Austrian mother with Greek roots , started in 2002 in the youth department of the Grazer AK with club football. In 2011 he moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg and drew attention to himself with his performances. So it came about that he was in the squad for the first time in the last championship game of the 2011/12 season. In summer 2012 he signed a long-term contract in Salzburg. On November 3, 2012, he made his Bundesliga debut in a game against FC Admira Wacker Mödling at the age of only 16 years and 224 days. In the 5-0 win of Salzburg, he came on for Valon Berisha in the 84th minute . In the Bundesliga game against Admira Wacker on February 24, 2014, he was in the starting line-up of the Bulls for the third time and scored his first goal in a competitive game.

In the 2013/14 season , in addition to eleven games for the "Bulls" in the Bundesliga, he also played three games for the farm team FC Liefering in the second highest Austrian league .

For the 2017/18 season , Lazaro moved to the German Bundesliga for Hertha BSC . Since he was suffering from an ankle injury at that time , Hertha BSC initially took him under contract until the end of the season as a player on loan, which was subject to a purchase obligation. After Lazaro completed his fifth Bundesliga appearance at the beginning of November, the agreed purchase obligation took effect and his contract was extended until June 30, 2021. On February 10, 2018 (22nd matchday), he scored his first in a 2-0 away win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen Bundesliga.

For the 2019/20 season he moved to Italy to Inter Milan , where he received a contract that ran until June 2023. In the first half of the season, the Austrian made six league appearances as well as one cup and four Champions League appearances , but head coach Conte preferred Danilo D'Ambrosio and Antonio Candreva in midfield . In the premier class , Lazaro was eliminated with Inter after the group stage and should have competed with the team in the Europa League .

Instead, he was awarded to Newcastle United in the English Premier League in January 2020 . The Austrian made 13 league appearances and two games in the FA Cup for the north of England, but could not recommend himself for a regular place here either. Lazaro finished 13th with Newcastle.

For the 2020/21 season he returned to Germany and switched to Borussia Mönchengladbach on loan .

From 2011 Valentino Lazaro was continuously in action for the respective Austrian youth national teams, mostly wearing the shirt number 10. At the U17 European Championship in Slovakia in 2013 he was eliminated with the team in the group stage, but prepared all three goals and was also able to qualify with the team for the U17 World Championship in 2013 in the United Arab Emirates . There Austria retired as the bottom of the group.

On May 15, 2014 Lazaro was called up for the first time in the A-squad of the Austrian national team and on May 30, 2014 came on in a test match against Iceland . On November 18, 2018, he scored his first international goal in a 2-1 win against Northern Ireland . Lazaro was not nominated for the EM 2016 .
