The finals of the 31st U-17 European Football Championship took place in Slovakia from May 5th to 17th, 2013 . After the U-21 European Football Championship in 2000 , it is the second European youth football championship to be held in Slovakia. It also served as a qualifier for the 2013 U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates . The best six teams qualified for the World Cup.

qualification

The first qualifying round, in which all UEFA associations except for host Slovakia participated, was drawn on November 29, 2011. It began on September 24, 2012 and was completed on November 4, 2012.

In the first qualifying round, which took place in mini-tournaments in one country each, Germany , Switzerland and Austria were able to prevail and reach the elite round. Germany won all of their three games: 5-0 against San Marino, 10-1 against Andorra and 8-1 against hosts Finland. The Swiss also won their group after a 3-0 win against the Faroe Islands, a 5-1 win against Cyprus and a 1-1 draw against hosts Austria, which in turn defeated the Faroe Islands 6-0 and played 1-1 against Cyprus and thus ended up in second place. Liechtenstein, on the other hand, failed because of Hungary and Italy.

In the elite round, Austria and Switzerland prevailed as hosts in their groups. Austria won two games (1-0 against Serbia and 2-1 against Georgia) after losing 1-0 to Ireland at the beginning. The Swiss managed two wins (2: 1 against Israel and 1: 0 against the Czech Republic) and a draw (0: 0 against Poland), which was enough to win the group. Germany were also group hosts, but two convincing wins (5-2 against Bulgaria and 6-0 against Estonia) were not enough for first place, which was won by the Ukrainian players in a direct duel (0-1).

mode

The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals.
