1978 European Under-21 Football Championship

At the 1978 UEFA European Under-21 Championship to 24 teams participating.

The qualifying games in the eight qualifying groups started on September 3, 1976 and ended on November 30, 1977. The quarter-finals took place between March 8 and April 5, 1978 and the semi-finals between April 19 and May 2, 1978. The final for the title took place on May 17 and 31, 1978, with Yugoslavia prevailing against the GDR with an overall score of 5: 4 and thus winning the European title.

While the GDR made it to the finals, Austria, which was in a group with the GDR in the preliminary round, as well as Switzerland were the last in the group. The Federal Republic of Germany did not take part.

mode

The 24 national teams were drawn into eight groups of teams each. The national selections had to play their encounters with two legs. The respective group winners (marked in yellow) were qualified for the quarter-finals, from which they played in the knockout system in the two- legged matches up to the final.

Performance of the German-speaking teams

GDR and Austria

The GDR and Austria met Turkey in the preliminary round in Group 3 . The GDR started with a 1-1 draw in Turkey and was able to win the remaining three games - 6: 1 ( Vienna ) and 2: 1 ( Erfurt ) against Austria and 4: 0 ( Magdeburg ) against Turkey Confidently take the group win. After Austria couldn't get past a 2-2 draw against Turkey in Vienna and had to admit defeat 1: 2 in Turkey, only the last group place remained for the red-white-red selection.

Switzerland

The Switzerland succeeded in the preliminary round Group 6 ( Bern ) against Scotland with a 2: 0 victory a successful start. After the remaining three games - 0: 4 ( Budweis ) and 0: 2 ( Zurich ) against Czechoslovakia and 1: 3 in Scotland - were lost, the Confederates had to make do with last place.
