Thomas Töpfer (born May 27, 1958 in Saalfeld ) was a soccer player in the area of the GDR soccer association . In its highest division, the GDR Oberliga , he played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena , with whom he won the 1980 cup. Töpfer is a multiple GDR young national player.

Sports career

At the age of 13, Töpfer began playing organized football in the children's team at FC Carl Zeiss Jena. As a junior player, he was appointed to the junior national team in 1975, for which he played nine international matches in 1975 and 1976, in which he was used both in midfield and in attack. Then he came seamlessly into the squad of the GDR youth national team, with which he completed 24 international matches from 1976 to 1980. In 1978 and 1980 he became vice European champion with the young talent selection.

For the 1976/77 season, Töpfer was included in the squad of the Jena league team. Coach Hans Meyer put the 1.77 m tall newcomer into the league games from the start, and Töpfer immediately won a place in the regular team. Of the 26 point games he played 23, in which he was used variably in all attack positions. Töpfer maintained his place in the regular team as a striker until 1980. On May 17, 1980, Töpfer was a substitute in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which FC Carl Zeiss won 3-1 after extra time against FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. On September 24, 1980, he played an international match with the GDR B national team as a substitute. After he had already completed six matches in the European Cup season 1980/81 in the competition of the cup winners , he was also a substitute in the final against the Soviet representative Dynamo Tbilisi on May 13, 1981 , but the Jena lost 2-1.

In the winter of 1981, Potter's career suffered a setback, in the second half of the 1980/81 season he could only be used in six league games, never for the full length of the game. Even during the 1981/82 season, he played only ten point games, only four of them over 90 minutes. Also in 1982/83 he was initially only a substitute, only in the second half of the season he came more or less regularly as a midfielder in the league. Töpfer played his last league season in 1983/84, but was finally only a reserve player. He played his last league game on May 19, 1984. In the last game day between FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt and FC Carl Zeiss Jena (2-0), he was on the pitch again as a right striker for 90 minutes. It was his 210th competitive game for the FC Carl Zeiss league team, including 161 league games (19 goals), 23 national cup games (5) and 26 European cup matches (6).

For the 1984/85 season Töpfer was transferred to the 2nd team of FC Carl Zeiss, promoted to the second-rate GDR league , but was no longer used there. During the winter break he moved to league rivals Wismut Gera , where he played 108 second division games until 1989, in which he scored 35 goals. Most recently he held the position of team captain there. Then Töpfer was still active at the third division BSG Jenaer Glaswerk .

In the summer of 2009, Töpfer left the Fulda gymnastics team , whose first men's team he coached for ten years; at the annual general meeting in 2009 he was awarded the “Silver Club Pin for 10 Years of Team Support”. Between 2004 and 2006 Töpfer also came to several missions for the team he trained. After a one-year break, he took over the job as coach of SV Gläserzell, which he left after a year in summer 2011. Here, too, the now 52-year-old was part of the second team.
