Frank Uhlig (born December 8, 1955 in Zschopau ) is a former German soccer player.
Athletic career
BSG / Club stations
Frank Uhlig began his career in his hometown at BSG Motor Zschopau . In 1972 he went to BSG Progress Krumhermersdorf , whose 1st team was represented in the third-class district league at that time . Two years later he moved to the first division club FC Karl-Marx-Stadt , but initially only played in the reserve team in the second-class league . Before the 1975/76 season, the defensive force moved up to the top division squad after he had made his debut in the East German Beletage towards the end of the 1974/75 season . Uhlig made his first appearance on the 19th matchday, when FCK defeated FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt 3-0 at home. The teenager was praised for his debut by trainer Dieter Erler in the trade journal fuwo - Die neue Fußballwoche : "I am happy about the successful debut of the 19-year-old Uhlig who took his chance."
From the 1976/77 season he was able to establish himself in the first team of the FCK and was on the ball in nine seasons in a row in more than 20 point games per season. He played a total of 268 competitive games in Karl-Marx-Stadt - including up to the game year 1984/85 , after which he ended his career, 237 in the league. His 30 goals scored in the top division of GDR football were often header hits. His excellence in heading the game helped his teams on both offense and defense. In the FDGB Cup , Uhlig made it into the final with FCK once: the 1982/83 final, however, the Karl-Marx-Städter clearly lost 4-0 against 1. FC Magdeburg .
Selection bets
From the spring of 1978, the FCK defender was part of the U-21 team in the GDR . He played five games for the junior team and won the silver medal at the U-21 European Championship in 1978 with his teammates .
On May 7, 1980 Uhlig completed his only A in the encounter between the GDR and the Soviet Union (2: 2), in which the Olympic selection of coach Rudolf Krause and not the A-team of coach Georg Buschner met the USSR Olympic representation - international match. In the same year he played two finals in the GDR Olympic team at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , which made him the greatest success of his football career by winning the silver medal. In the final itself he was not used. With his teammates he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in the same year . Uhlig played a total of 21 games for the GDR's Olympic team and was initially also scheduled to rebuild the team for the Los Angeles games , but disappeared from the focus of those responsible for selection with head coach Bernd at the beginning of 1983 and the qualification that began that spring Rod .
Further career
After the reunification, Uhlig became an energy consultant. Today he heads the Chemnitz branch of Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz. He is still connected to football. He organizes football camps and trips for children and young people.
