FDGB Cup 1982/83
The games for the FDGB soccer cup 1982/83 were the 32nd edition of this competition.
75 teams had qualified for the competition. It began with a qualifying round for which six GDR league players had been drawn. In the first main round, the 15 district cup winners, 55 teams from the second-rate GDR league and the two league relegated teams from the 1981/82 season took part.
All encounters were played up to the decision, no winner was determined after 90 minutes, they were extended and a penalty shoot- out was carried out if necessary .
While there were four district cup winners in the intermediate round with 18 teams, only Chemie Leipzig II made it to the second main round. Here the 14 teams of the GDR league intervened in the competition. In addition to the last district cup winner, the upper division clubs Chemie Böhlen , Chemie Halle and Sachsenring Zwickau were eliminated after their first appearance. With Motor Fritz Heckert Karl-Marx-Stadt , Chemie Leipzig I, Chemie Buna Schkopau , Vorwärts Stralsund and Motor Suhl , five second division teams made it to the round of 16. This also survived Motor Suhl, which only had to bow to cup defender Dynamo Dresden in the quarterfinals . Last year's finalist and new East German champion Dynamo Berlin also reached the round of eight, but had to give up at FC Carl Zeiss Jena 2: 4.
While the six-time cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg knew how to use its two home games in the quarter and semi-finals and made it into the cup final for the seventh time, FC Karl-Marx-Stadt reached the final for the second time. Both teams faced each other in the 1969 final, which the Magdeburg team clearly won 4-0.

Course of the game
In the game of the table sixth against the bottom of the table of the completed league season 1982/83 there was no clear favorite in advance. However, Magdeburg with its four current national players Stahmann, Pommerenke, Steinbach and Streich had the nominally better player potential and was hoping for a conciliatory end to the season after the disappointing performance in the major league.
In the first half an hour, both teams played an even game. Although the FCM took over the build-up of the game, the Karl-Marx-Städter set a skilful counter game against it. There were scoring chances on both sides, but initially remained unused. Then it was Joachim Streich, top scorer of the league season, who put his team in the lead with his goal in the 34th minute. Three minutes later, midfielder Axel Wittke increased to 2-0. As a result, 1. FC Magdeburg with its midfield axis Wittke, Pommerenke and Steinbach controlled the game more and more, while on the other hand, the Karl-Marx-Städter playmaker Joachim Müller could not get the game of his team under control.
FCK coach Lienemann tried to turn the game around by switching from Eitemüller to Schubert at the beginning of the second half, but after eight minutes Streich made the preliminary decision with his second goal. While the FCK then only tried to limit the amount of the defeat, Pommerenke set the final point in the 88th minute with the 4-0 and ensured the same final result as 14 years ago against the same opponent. At that time it was Magdeburg's third, this time the seventh cup win. Both coaches commented on the game as follows:
- Kreul (FCM): “Of course I am happy that everything went so well. The team fought incredibly. I would like to particularly highlight Pommerenke, Stahmann, Halata and Streich. The two quick hits gave us the necessary security ”.
- Lienemann (FCK): “Of course I'm disappointed. But the FCM deserved to win. He was better than us and had people on hand who could score ”. (Volksstimme Magdeburg, June 6, 1983)
