Course of the game

Scene from the final: Rostock's goalkeeper Leber in action

In the fifth final of the FDGB soccer cup, SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt was the second and SC Empor Rostock was the ninth of the past GDR league season 1954/55. Both teams had to do without important regular players, Wismut on Tröger , Satrapa and Freitag , Empor could not use Leeb and Speth . The Wismut-Elf underlined their easy favorite position with the opening goal after just 90 seconds. Her game was technically and tactically superior at first, in midfield she constantly surprised with changes in position. On the other hand, Rostock saw defensive weaknesses, insecure ball acceptance and imprecise passing play. It was only after about twenty minutes that SC Empor found the thread, increased the mileage and began to act more variably in the attack.

Center forward Holtfreter took command on the offensive and led the Rostock equalizer with his 20-meter shot 150 seconds after the start of the second half. His shot still bounced against the crossbar, but the new player Zwahr turned into the right corner. When it seemed that Empor could now prevail with his athletic game against the Wismut team, the Rostockers were thrown back by a goalkeeping error. Stopper Zapf had previously been unable to hold his opponent Viertel, whose low shot finally let goalkeeper Leber slip under his body. The SC Empor was not discouraged by the renewed deficit, however, in the 71st minute he managed to equalize again after a remarkable move. Pöschel had surprisingly switched to the right attacking side, took over a through pass from Zedel and shot at full speed into the Wismut goal.

Since it was still 2-2 after 90 minutes, both teams had to go into extra time. Bismut coach Karl Dittes now used the opportunity to change and replaced his right striker Wagner against Hans Meyer. He also ordered midfielder Siegfried Wolf into the attack, whose brother Karl Wolf temporarily acted as the sixth striker. The increased offensive put SC Empor under considerable pressure, but it took 20 minutes to achieve a countable success. The sixth corner kick for Wismut, kicked from the right, fended off goalkeeper Leber too short, the Wismut striker Mohr fought for the ball despite the distress and played it to his strike partner Günther. This stood uncovered in front of the Rostock goal and shot from six meters up in the left corner to 3: 2 for Bismut. From this further deficit, the SC Empor did not recover in the last ten minutes.
