Armin Günther started playing soccer in Schneeberg. In 1946 he came to BSG Wismut Aue and played with the team from the district class to the upper league. His greatest successes were winning the GDR championship twice in 1956 and 1957 and winning the FDGB Cup in 1955. Armin Günther played his last league game on August 31, 1958, at SC Motor Jena (0: 1). He played a total of 145 league games (46 goals) from 1951 to 1958.

After his career followed from 1960 on a coaching degree. From March 10, 1962, he took over as the successor to Manfred Fuchs as head coach at his old club and now four-time GDR champion SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt , which he held until the end of the 1964/65 season . He then became a coach at the former BSG Aktivist Böhlen district division , whom he promptly led into the second-rate GDR league. Although the Randleipziger rose again in the 1966/67 season, but in the following season 1967/68 the Böhlener qualified again for the GDR league. In the last season under Müller, the team, which has meanwhile been renamed BSG Chemie Böhlen, achieved a good midfield position. Since the Müller era, the Böhlener has always played second or first class in the DFV's game operations. In the summer of 1969, Müller returned to Wismut Aue and was responsible for the junior division of the junior league team.

After that he was assistant coach under Bringfried Müller (1975–1977), Manfred Fuchs (1977–1981) and Hans-Ulrich Thomale (1981–1985).
