The GDR Oberliga 1964/65 was the 16th edition of the top division of the GDR . The ASK Vorwärts Berlin became champion for the fourth time , making it the sole record champion of the GDR. The season began on August 9, 1964 and ended on June 6, 1965.
Before the season
In purely geographical terms, the league was more balanced at the start of the season than it had been in years. After all, six of the 14 upper division clubs came from the northern and central districts . “Only” eight came from the southern districts. The district of Neubrandenburg was represented for the first (and ultimately also for the last) time in the top football class. In contrast, the Halle district did not have a senior league representative for the first time.
Season course
After Vorwärts Berlin could not intervene decisively in the championship race for two years, the army footballers secured their fourth championship title this time with two game days before the end. Thus Vorwärts passed Wismut Aue and was now the sole GDR record champion. In second and third place followed the masters of the previous years Motor Jena (master 1963) and Chemie Leipzig (master 1964), whereby only Jena offered the Berliners permanent serious competition. With its fourth place, SC Leipzig crossed the finish line again behind city rivals Chemie Leipzig.
The relegation battle, however, was only finally decided on the last day of the game. After last year's surprise team, Motor Steinach, was prematurely relegated, the decision about the remaining relegation place culminated in a direct duel between SC Neubrandenburg and Dynamo Dresden on the last day of the match. At home, the Dresden team prevailed 5: 3 against their competitors from the north. Both Neubrandenburg and Steinach never rose again to the top division.
The season was interrupted for almost two months between September and November 1964 due to the posting of players for the GDR Olympic team that took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo . The free time was bridged with the Olympic Cup , in which all 14 league clubs took part with their remaining players.

The FDGB-Pokal was won this season by Aufbau Magdeburg. The Magdeburg thus defended their title from the previous season. In the final, they defeated the runner-up from Jena 2-1.
International competitions
Once again, the East German participants in the respective European Cup competitions did not get beyond their first opponents. Chemie Leipzig failed in the European Champions Cup to Győri Vasas ETO , construction Magdeburg in the European Cup Winners' Cup to Galatasaray Istanbul and SC Leipzig in the Messestädte Cup at the Wiener Sport-Club . The GDR representatives were only successful in the International Football Cup . Of the four participants, SC Leipzig, Empor Rostock, Vorwärts Berlin and SC Karl-Marx-Stadt, Leipzig, Rostock and Karl-Marx-Stadt won their preliminary round groups. The SC Leipzig made it to the finals and lost to Polonia Bytom there .
