Gerhard Körner (born September 20, 1941 in Zwickau ) is a former soccer player. The 33-time national soccer player of the GDR played at club level for Vorwärts Berlin and after the East Berliners moved in 1971 for FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder.
Athletic career
Körner, who was called "Theo" during his footballing career after the war of liberation poet Theodor Körner , was one of the top football players in the GDR in the 1960s. This is demonstrated not only his five junior international matches and 33 games in the East German senior team from 1962 to 1969, but his 276 appearances in the league , major league GDR football , which he solely with the then leading football club of the Army Sports Association forward completed , as well as another 25 European Cup games.
With these 276 first division matches, Körner has played the most league games for the army team behind his club mates Jürgen Nöldner (285) and Lothar Haus (281). His exceptional position can also be seen in the number of his successes: four times GDR soccer champions in 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1969 and GDR soccer cup winners in 1970 as well as bronze medalists at the 1964 Olympic soccer tournament in Tokyo. With his perfect ball handling and creative talent, he was one of the favorite players of national coach Karoly Soos . Only when the national coach Georg Buschner, who was appointed to succeed Harald Seeger in 1970, changed the style of the national team from playful to combative, there was no room for Körner. In 1965, the GDR soccer newspaper fuwo recognized Körner as the best points player of the season as a result of its grades.
Körner showed his athletic talent in school sports. His sports teacher made sure that he registered to play football with the BSG Wismut in his native Wilkau-Haßlau , a small town on the outskirts of Zwickau. Up to the age of 18, Körner went through all age groups there, before he signed up for service in the GDR army after passing high school. He was drafted to Marienberg , where he was given the opportunity to continue playing soccer at Vorwärts Marienberg . The army sports communities in the GDR province served the central football club of the army sports association, Vorwärts Berlin, as a cadre forge. That is why the move to East Berlin 1960 appears logical in the retrospective. In the NVA he had the rank of captain .
Despite the imminent 30th birthday in the summer of 1971, Körner took part in the step of the forward team from East Berlin to Frankfurt / Oder. On the 12th matchday of the 1972/73 season he ran for the last time in the East German elite league in the 6-1 home win of the Red-Yellows against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , where he was once again able to excel as a goalscorer.
Further career
Since he had already been trained as a qualified sports teacher during his active time at the Leipzig Sports University DHfK , he started working as a football district trainer in Berlin from 1973, where he was mainly responsible for youth development. He later worked as an assistant coach at 1. FC Union in Berlin , then as a volunteer at other lower-class Berlin clubs such as Olympiakos Berlin. At times he worked on the integration program “Football Against Violence”, which takes care of young foreigners. In 2007, when he was almost 66, he was elected sports director of FC Karlshorst.
